hookah/oxygen bar
    #2432852 - 03/14/04 11:47 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I was thinking of opening a small shop. Like a hookah bar/oxygen bar. I have done some research on some pricing, and i think i can get a set-up for like 11,000( http://www.breatheo2.com/pa1006.htm ). I figure that the hookah part should be easier to put to together, although i know nothing on the licenses that you need to sell tobacco. Location IS key, but there is a college near. and the area is already full of the culture that it would take to support one. I was looking and i cant seem to find a "shop" like this in my area."state". The way i see it, there isnt that much product to handle, and the machine generates its own oxygen. I am thinking that i can open for less than 15-20,000. So i am going to start looking into trying to get a small business loan. Im thinking it would be cool to put some laptops at the bar, so people could be online while there hooked up. "ha i will be around the shroomery all the time". It is going to be split, with something like a half wall. One side the o2 bar, the other the hookah side. Im think something along the lines of couple of bad-ass leather couches, some cool coffee tables, make it like 4-5 separate booths. And have table games, from chess to rock-um sock-um robots. Real relaxed, what do you think?...worth the shot?

i live in a college town. we've got a hookah lounge. it's pretty cool. it's in this basement i guess. it's got those bead divider things hanging from the ceilings in places, a bunch of couches, rugs, and a lot of comfortable furniture. the light is low and the atmosphere very chill. sometimes they've got live music, sometimes they just put on records. you go in, walk up to the bar, and you can get a "large" hookah (lasts about an hour and 20 minutes) for $10 or a "small" hookah (lasts about 45) for $5. they seem to be doing pretty well.

I have been playing with the idea of a hooka cafe. Hooka cafe club kinda thing the area I live in is developing and i dont think it is the right time yet. But in a nother ten years or so by the time I am ready to open one I think the town will be ready for me. Well me thinks.

it's probably better to start out as just a hookah lounge. the oxygen equipment is going to cost a lot of money. you might also have a lot of paranoid legislators trying to shut you down. they're weird about that kind of stuff. who knows why. it also seems to me that hookahs and oxygen respirators don't mix. the vibes clash, you know?

in the hookah lounge in my town, they also sell coffee and whatnot. the place, even though it's only open 6 hours of the day (9 at night 'til 3) still seems to be doing quite well. i suppose they don't have much overhead to begin with and they're probably bringing in at least $200 a night, even when there's no band playing. definitely go for it. i'm surprised there aren't more of these.

Im not trying to put downn your idea, I just know alot about business.

How long is the lease for to get only $400 a month? Utilities, license, employes. Your looking at propably $1,000 a month easy.

Also many cities have air purification laws if your gona allow smoking inside, you should first check these out because if the building isnt equiped for it then it could cost you about 5 to 10K to buy and have everything installed to comply.

Also youll need a second form of income for a while because if you want to do things right, beat compound intrest fees and pay things up your propably not gona see any profit at all for a year or two.

What are the facilities like? Are their good restrooms? Is their clean water or will you need to buy a purification system? What about parking?: Can your space handle minimum of ten cars or are people going to have to walk? Anything more than 1/2 a block cuts business big time.

The two firs things I would do is to look at the building its self, and check to see if it complys with regulations. If you get locked into a lease and then find out you have to remodle the bathrooms or install air/water purifiers then your screwed. Then I would look into getting a license to buy and sell tobaco. That may prove to be your biggest obstical. I know getting a liquer license takes a long time and they investigate your entire history.

If you have any questions I would be glad to help. I come from a family that owns restaurants and were all currently working on opening a chain of deli/bakeries in SoCal. Our goal is to have 11 stores and 2 kitchens in 4 years. the first two open in October.
