A while back i came across this instrument and i never found out what it was called... Its made of wood, around 2-3 feet tall and has only one string. at the top is a knob- so when you pluck the string and turn the knob, you get a trippy noise.. what is this called?

the technical name for it is a doo-hickey.
But it can also be called "thingy".

Also, a whatchamaroo.

Danlennon, I will ask suffer for a serious answer to your question when he gets home. He has instruments from all over the worls in his living room, I bet there's one in there, and I'll try to solve your mystery. If not, whatchamacallit will have to suffice.

ask an african, im sure they would know.
i saw it once at a african dance event, a guy came out with one like 6 feet tall, he was carrying it around like it was a giant penis and playing it onstage. i think thats how its actually supposed to be played though.

truthfully i dont know where its from. it looked primitive compared to most instruments. all it had was a knob which distorts the tune of it but it sounds so cool

there is alot of "modified" designs between different tribes/etc ...it could be a spin-off like that...
just like every different, group of Aborigines had a different Key Didge....
ohh ,shit could it be a Gopichand, these were actually kind popular for a while
