smashing instruments on stage

last night i got to watch a guitarist smash his guitar to pieces, followed by the drummer smashing his kick drum and floor tom to smithereens. they finished the song with an acoustic guitar while the drummer walked around the club banging on his snare. and they did this for a room of only about 30 people which is impressive. it was really cool.

usually i would say "what a stupid waste of money" or call them "who wannabes" but in this case it was great. it energized the whole room and got everyone who was just sort of there really into it and made them happy they attended a show with that level of primal punk rock attitude.

when i think about it, i don't suppose i've ever actually seen anyone smash a drum set live before. only on tv which isn't as cool.

I prefer it when someone bites the head off a bat, or invites a girl up on stage, and then when she refuses his sexual advances, he hits her in the head with a bottle and pees on her.

i was at a band last nite and just 1 dood was tryin to make a mosh pit rofl
he kept pushing me and no1 else was into the mosh cept him
ya that was lame but smashin shit sounds nice

i think its a lame ass thing to do. why break an instrument... you could use that energy in your actual songs, rather than a lame ripped off antic on stage.

i love instruments, all different kinds, and seeing them destroyed in the hands of musicians who don't give a fuck really pisses me off.

not gonna be a bitch about you enjoying it tho

it is a waste, but i asked them how they afford it and they apparently buy the cheapest second hand shit they can to smash. the floor tom still had the price tag on it actually. it's a total gimmick, but it worked well for what it was meant to do, which is make the audience think "damn, these guys go all out for their shows" and besides smashing the intruments they really do anyway. the singer is a friend of mine and i've seen them before and they're always doing crazy live shit like setting up 20 monitors with crazy shit on it or getting a bunch of performance artists to roam the room and stage doing wierd shit. they just try to put on the best show they can. i'd never seen them smash anything though, and i wasn't expecting it.

why not just keep it and keep using it to play better and better shows?

i can't imagine gettin g a new guitar for every show, when you get used to a guitar, you reallyyyy get used to it.

the guitarist has a nice guitar he would never smash i'm sure. he switches to the throw away guitar when he wants to get a little rough.

it's the same thing pete townsend does. during their last song the guitar tech will hand him the piece of shit guitar he smashes every night, so he he can do his famous smashing. his guitar is actually pre-broken at the neck so it's easier for him to smash. then the tech puts it back together for the next night. it's most likely a cheap mexican strat that costs $300, and then he reuses it as many times as he can to make the crowd go crazy and feel like their getting some sort of special show when in fact he does it every night.

kurt cobain would do the same thing sort of. he'd never smash his beloved mustang or jaguar. he would always switch to a cheap strat if he was going to destroy it. when he would stab the guitar into his speaker cabinet it's not like he's destroying the whole thing. it's just a $100 speaker the tech replaces the next day. smashing it through the kick drum head is even cheaper to replace. it's just a drum head. when you're making thousands of dollars a night on ticket sales and merch, it's really not a big deal to bang up a few things. the effect it has on the crowd is worth the money.

i think a small band smashing stuff for thirty people, knowing they're going to lose money on the show, is really cool though. that's fucking punk rock!
