How do I get a teaching certificate?
    #4318592 - 06/20/05 08:39 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone here have a teaching certificate? I was thinking about trying to get one, but I really don't know how much time/money is involved.

Do you have a college degree?

2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

depends on your state.

I recommend visiting a local community college and asking an advisor what the circulum is for your state.

perhaps. perhaps not. all depends on your state.

usually, the requirements are:

bachelors degree (+)
several classes in education theory and instruction.
state exam of basic skills and subject matter
student teaching (usually full-time for a year - usually no pay).
assessment by school district officials

sometimes you can bypass most of this if you have worked in the field of your teaching for 5+ years.

but, of course, all of this is on a state-by-state basis.

I was a teacher until our city had some deep budget cutbacks and they laid off a few hundred teachers. If I can do it, you can do it

Damn that's pretty steep. I was expecting the test and the classes...

Teaching full time for a year? How is that even possible? How are you expected to make a living?

Also alot of states make you go back to school every couple of years for "refreshment" courses. So pretty much you never stop going to school. Also you pay for it.

Both my parents are teachers. They had to sell our house and move us to a different town after they did their student teaching.

Jesus christ... this is WAY involved. So basically... if I wanted to skip a bunch of this..I'd have to teach what I studied in college and at work... IT?

It's pretty hard but the pay is worth it. Plus you get paid for summer vacation.

How do you manage teaching full time for a year though without getting paid?

my dad's a VP now, and he makes around 60k a year. My mom probably makes about 40. It's not that much, but it's enough to live quite comfortably.

It matters what area they are in. In Beverly Hills...they probably don't make shit in comparison to what most residents there make. In my hometown where everybody is on welfare or working for minimum wage....they are rich.

some states will let you sit the exam (challenge) if you have your degree already. teachers pay varies widely. i heard alaska pays the top rate for teachers

You don't need a teaching certificate or diploma to teach english in Japan. Your degree is all you'll need.
