Teachers
    #7509307 - 10/11/07 03:20 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Im sure most of you here have had at least one teacher that you felt a real connection with.

One who you felt knew exactly what they were talking about and had all the necassary qualifications to be called a "Teacher".
One who not only taught you what they were supposed to teach you for the certain class you took with them, but they also gave you great insight on real life things.

A teacher with a good head on their shoulders and gave you their opinions of what they think life should be about, and how you should face your fears and obstacles, and kept pushing you to never give up.

Well, i had a few of those kinds of teachers through high school and they managed to leave their mark with me. I cant forget how significant the things they said proved to be.

When i trip, usually the times i trip by myself, these great people come to mind and i deeply analyze the times i spent learing what they had to offer. This really takes my trip to a higher level and makes me feel an overwhelming connection with them, or at least the memories i have of them.
I look at them with a new mind and eyes and i can see how blessed they are for having chosen to be teachers and excelling at their profession. To me they are really doing God's work by helping guide young spirits, who are most of the time lost spirits in need of guidance (I know I was.)

When I think about this this really gets me motivated to one day become a great teacher.

Here's a really good quote by John Steinbeck:
"I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit."

What are your thoughts on any good teachers youve had?

I would be in jail or dead right now if it wasn't for two teachers I've had in my life.

Good teachers are amazing, especially considering how corrupt, bankrupt, and pointless the American Educational Institution has become. Most teachers are completely worthless people but when you get a teacher with lots of life experience who won't bullshit you... that's what it's all about.

in my experience, it's those teachers that try to be buddy buddy with you with all those stories of life experiences and whatnot that you have to be most careful about. they are the ones that are just trying to impress impressionable kids to stroke their egos. the good teachers are the ones that do their job and convey the material in a well rounded way without presenting any bias in their opinions.

also, fuck the multi-cultural movement in this country. hell learning about other cultures, the slave era, and how horrible the native americans got it is about all i can remember from elementary through high school. why can't i remember good foundational and helpful knowledge, like the history of the depression, or the Korean war? oh right...i was too busy learning how horrible america has been throughout the world/years (civil war, vietnam, barely learned about World War 2). and since i am already ranting, why is it, that when talking about the slave era, the only thing people focus on is how horrible america was at the time? hell america only accounted for 5% of the slave industry at the time, do you know who controlled 75%+ of the rest of it, that's right, the ISLAMIC controlled countries; i am most definitely not saying "hell, america is great! 5% ain't bad right!? ), I am just trying to lay down some perspective on the issue. and why does no one attribute the obvious and amazingly great thing that america did...? THAT'S RIGHT, WE, AMERICA, ABOLISHED SLAVERY. yet, the only thing this self hating country can do is just focus on the bad things done. perhaps this is just a perspective that can be shared from my own personal education, but still, I have a subtle feeling that there are others out there who experienced this also...

/end rant

I thought I did

Then I realized I only liked them because they were so lax about being authority figures and they did, in fact, suck as teachers

I don't know I think that the American Education System and the Curriculum's that are usually presented in no way prepare you for life. American Schools are a joke. However the teachers I was talking about are the ones who will go to bat for you or be honest about their opinions or have a passion that they convey to you and make you feel. Most of the teachers I've had were brain dead 30 something burn-outs who were just reciting words out of books and glancing at homework assignments grading on word count and the ability to regurgitate what was written in the book. However when you get one of those teachers that'll tell you that they think the system is fucked, or you get one of those teachers who'll defend you to the principal or the administration, or you get one of those teachers that you can bounce ideas or philosophies off of... that's something special. Unfortunately those types are really rare.

I totally get what you're saying about the fraud teachers that just want to be cool, I had one of those in Jr. High and I hated that motherfucker because he was fake but if you're lucky enough to get one of the teachers who want to help you find yourself or want to push you in the right direction, it's amazing.
