Mt. Rushmore/The Black Hills

I've seen a lot of stuff that was beautiful (The Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, The Alps in Europe, etc...). The Black Hills are right up there as far as beauty goes. It smells like pine when you are there. It just seems like a magical place.
P.S. Parking at Mt. Rushmore was a ripoff!

you know the black hills were/are intensely sacred to the Lakota natives. Then we stole it and dynamited the faces of a bunch of white dudes who founded the genocidal nation that dominated the continent. Just some food for thought

oy... as far as land is considered - many horrible things are happening. i just handed in a 10+ page report about that... extremely disheartening. i could get into it however... it did take 10 pages to explain only a small amount of it and im tired from work. hehe.
the black hills are BEAUTIFUL. i love South Dakota. I've been there MANY times. Did u check out the Badlands? I have some of the most amazing pictures from there. It's incredible. The east side isn't that great but the west side of SD is insane. People don't understand unless they have been there.
Wasn't impressed w/ Mt Rushmore... i'm not ever really impressed by things humans have created. i am much more interested in the art of the earth.
plus - Mt Rushmore is ur typical tourist place. my ex and i always tried to get away from that w/ our road trips.
did u go through the Rushmore caves? that was pretty cool!!! haha but if ur freaked out w/ tight spaces... i definately don't suggest it. i got a little freaked in some spots. hehe.

I think I drove near Spearfish Canyon but I am not sure. I was kind of disheartened at all of the tourist trap stuff. There is a waterfall called "Roughlock Falls" which I spent a while trying to find and it was puny. That and a few other things kind of turned me off to all of the stuff that was being advertised on the billboards in the area.
But, when I climbed up to the top of that rocky outcropping in the Black Hills and looked at the scene before me....it made it all worth it. I forgot about the tourist traps, the anal-raping parking fee for Mt. Rushmore, and the lame stuff that was advertised as being "amazing". I have never seen anything like that. With the wind blowing and pine scent everywhere through the air, it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. It was more beautiful than the Grand Canyon in my opinion.

Get your fast-food eating but skinny ass out to Denver and we'll go check out some cool shit. Rocky Mountain National Park is only 45 minutes away.
I think I will be leaving sometime in the next week for my Yellowstone/Grand Teton/Glacier National Park tour.

Oh ya!!! I went to Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.
I tell ya - to get away - make sure u backpack and get the backcountry campsites. It's a lot of work if u are staying more than 1 day back there b/c u do have to bring a lot of water, tent, all that stuff and the hikes are long depending on where u wanna set up but it's WORTH it!!!
Yellowstone was cool but the Grand Tetons was much less touristy and i actually was hiking next to a baby grizzly bear (terrifying at the time... awesome looking back on) and after that we ran into a young moose that decided to stop for lunch in the middle of our trail (the Jenny Lake trail ... take it... you'll love it). it was insane and really amazing.
I've been to a crapload of Nat'l Parks and before my ex and i broke up we were planning to go to Glacier... i heard it's incredible.. so i'll have to find my own way out there sometime... maybe next year.

Yep. I have a thread called "Badlands National Park" somewhere.

The east side is SOOO boring. It is just flat plains. I stopped at this place called the "Corn Palace" in Mitchell. Lame

On a 1-10 scale of being impressed (1 being not impressed, 5 being somewhat impressed, and 10 being amazed), Mt. Rushmore was about a 5. The Black Hills were a 10.

I was so turned off by all of the tourist traps that I thought it would probably suck, so I passed. I am going to see Carlsbad Caverns anyway.
I hope I can hook up with some people who want to do some climbing. The climbing was awesome in that little jaunt in the Black Hills I did.

ya - i do rock climbing. i have been wanting to actually go to Arkansas b/c i heard they have GREAT rock climbing.
i went to the Corn Palace. hahaha. very tacky but my ex used to play basketball games there so he had memories. lol.
Oh did u see the signs : "FREE WATER at Walls Drug"
haha... i loved those. we went there and it SUCKED. totally dead.
Wyoming is beautiful and don't let the horrible drive to Yellowstone make u think otherwise. On the west end after Yellowstone it is INCREDIBLE. ooo it's so amazing. i was thinking of actually buying land out there.. for what? no clue.. but it's so beautiful

Yeah....I remember seeing about 20 signs for Walls Drug. I remember reading later that they have buffalo burgers. I should have stopped for that. But, I was so excited about the Badlands that I didn't stop.
