humidifier not humidifying. where is the humidity?

i got a cool mist humidifier *trying* to keep the humidity in respectable levels, but i only manage to get it all the way to 70%rH, no more... its a vick's humidifier. it has 2 5/8" hose coming out of a "T" connector each. each hose is "regulated" with a pass key. the chambers have each exhaust holes half of their respective intake holes. basically thats it. and it would work in theory as the humidifier creates humidity, and the carries it out through the hosing to the terrarium. but no. its not working. only 70%rH... im blocked. i tried different hygrometers, and all of them say the same... but where can the humidity be going? i hear people feeding 5 terrariums with a cool mist, i cant even do two! any insights as to what i might be overlooking? peace & happiness ~h

put some perlite in the bottom of your terrium. this will absorb any watter that might leak into the containers

HHmm... sounds like to much air flowing though your system. To much air even humindiy filled will dry things out. Try only runing your system twice a day for a half hour each. This should remove CO2 and maintain humidity. Also you should defintily apply perlite to hold the bulk of your moisture. A Vicks system has enough flow for many setups if you have one or two you should tone it down. Good luck and have a very Happy ThanksGiving!!!

>any insights as to what i might be overlooking? Are you sure the humidifier shows the correct value? Have you calibrated it? There is a document at the shroomery that tells you how to do it.

i tried calibrating all three hygrometers... they were just off by a couple of degrees... i also got a radio shack hygrometer, which is in around the same range as the other two. its there a way to calibrate a digital one? arrrrrghhhh.... i do believe that GoodTimes is on track with the airflow thing... how can i work it out? links?

GoodTimes, man, you were rigth. It did not made sense to me at the beginning, but i gave it a try anyways... so ran straight the tubing cool_mist-to-terrarium and after not so much, the humidity was around 89%-90% rH. now, if i could find the sweet spot that place the rH in the spot i want, cultivating might be bliss. i am running it 24 hours... maybe ill try 30 mins on/off. that can even bring it up. im avoiding using perlite, for aesthetics more than anything else, and simplicity of set-up. happy thanksgiving to you! thanks. p&h ~H

EXACT same thing happened to me man.. Had tubing running out of the humidifier, through a lever valve, through more tubing, into the L-Bend on the pvc piping. I'd leave the humidifer on for 24 hours, and I dont think I even made it up to 75. The only thing I could figure was that cool-mist humidifiers release a mist instead of a vapor, so the moisture might all be condensing in the 3' of tubes before it hit the aquarium. I took out the tubing, and ran a straight PVC pipe going all the way up, and it fixed the problem right up.. Hits just the right level for casings now if I leave it on 24/7

One thing you have to watch is the temperature difference inside and outside of your chamber. If the humidifier is at room temperature and it pipes into a heated grow chamber you won't get good humidification. Cooler (room temp) air holds less moisture at saturation than warmer air. Saturated cool air will actually have a drying effect when warmed. The opposite happens when you cool saturated warm air and the moisture drops out (e.g. condensation the outside of a glass of ice water.) You might try warming the water in the humidifier in some manner before pumping it into your chamber.

thanks everybody!! finally get it all set up. only thing left is some temperature variation, but ill get to it as i fine tune it. this has gotten out of control. the other day i ate 4 grams and for an hour all i did was worry about who's got the time and temperature and relative humidity. at plain street... talk about insanity! hehe... peace & happiness ~h
