What happened to the Pirate Bay??
    #4244676 -

http://thepiratebay.org/

I just went to the pirate bay to download some music and noticed it has been shut down because there is a new version coming.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to shut down an old version before having a new version ready so does anyone have any ideas on whats going on??

Probably to do with new Swedish copyright laws

Quote:
The extremely popular web site The Pirate Bay as until now been able to operate very freely under the quite liberal Swedish Copyright laws. This will end on 2005-07-01 when a new Swedish law is put to life as a result of EU harmonization. The new law will mean that distribution, uploading, downloading and copying of movies and music you do not own the right to will become illegal.

word on the street is, they're coming back with a new interface

possible as a torrent search engine instead of a tracker, although that's just speculation

fingers crossed they won't fade away :strokebeard:

I hope you're right. The site gives me some hope since it's saying something about a new version coming out.

The stupid laws also makes Linux distributions illegal.  :mad2:

As far as I understand it, the new law also makes viewing any copyrighted web-page (i.e any web page) illegal, as the data has to be downloaded to be viewed.

STUPID.

Hey man, you coming to the G8 march/rally/riot in Edinburgh?

I'm should be getting a ticket for the bus to the one on the 2nd... Definately going to be at the G8alternatives on the 3rd and the demonstration against the G8 on the 6th.

wait, wait, wait... what the fuck? this is something that i have not heard of.. scandinavia has quite uniform copywrite-laws, and quite open ones at that... this article at linuxreviews is the first i've heard of this. are there any other nordics here who happen to be involved in an anti-this movement? there certainly must be an opposition to this kind of shit, esp. seeing how scandinavia has always been so wary of the EU!

It seems like torrentspy.com is getting fucked as well...

I just did a search and this is what i got:

"There has been an error with your search

This search query has been blocked at the request of the copyright holder, in compliance with
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA")"
http://torrentspy.com/search.asp?query=star+wars&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

Though it seems only some of the things are disabled... Let's hope it doesn't get worse!

Only certain searches have been blocked. For example, if I wanted to get a popular imaginary show called "Family Dude" and got that message when I tried to search for it, I could search for "Family", "Dude", "Dude Family", "Family 1 Dude" or any number of other searches, and still find the torrents.
