DoD freezing and closing.????

After about 10 minutes of playing on DoD it freezes then shuts down and I don't get any errors....This started happening last night. I don't think it's a hardware problem because I don't get any errors and everything else works fine. Could it be from a virus???

I ran Ad-Ware SE and it found a few things, but nothing major I don't think...

hmmmmm...

That's interesting. I've had DoD freeze and shut down on me a few times, but after a while, it didn't freeze up and shut down. Have you tried updating video drivers?

DoD has worked fine for a few months and I haven't changed drivers or anything.....This just happened out of nowhere.

I was just playing Diablo II then my computer made a strange noise and re-booted.....I breuahgt my CPU speed down 100MHz, i'll see if that works. I hope my hardware isn't giving out on me.

With the lower clock speed DoD ran fine.  I think my CPU is starting to give out on me :frown:

CPUs don't intermittently "give out" unless it is shutting off due to overheating.. Memory, OTOH, can get intermittently wacky at any given time. I would first clean out the box and inspect/adjust/supplement the cooling system focusing on the CPU first and the memory second. If you have any memory that will work, even if it is in another working box, replace with that and see if the problem goes away.

I used to be into overclocking alot and was an active member on some foroums, and from what I remmeber this happened to a few people. My games were working fine after I put the clock speed down 100MHz, then they started shutting down again the next day, so I went back to stock. I just hope it lasts untill I can afford a new one.

IME they either work or they're dead. can you provide an example of intermittent operation not related to thermal protection?

I haven't seen many, but I have seen a few. The last one I looked at would start to boot the OS and then lock up, usually with random garbage (random ascii characters with odd colors) on the screen. The same would happen in BIOS. Assumed it was bad memory... turned out to be a bad CPU.

One of the limiting factors of a CPU is called the critical path. The critical path determines the longest clock cycle needed in order to execute the slowest instruction chain. This is what determines your maximum clock rate... if your clock rate exceeds the time needed by the critical path by just a little bit, your CPU will function correctly almost all the time, but will intermittently fail 'randomly'. This type of intermittent failure is often seen when people overclock their system.

I have also seen microcontrollers (CPUs) fail intermittently from static damage. Some of the input lines would work while others would not. Actually, I have only seen one of these fail as well... as I said, not common.

The "traces" within the dye of the CPU will also fail with time. You can actually see the metal bulge in places (using an electron microscope) from the electrons shooting around in there. Eventually the metal 'traces' get thin enough to cause intermittent failures. This is very rare and takes a long time before the metal fatigues and gives out. If I remember correctly, this is known as metal migration.

I don't understand how my CPU would start overheating though....My fan works fine and has foir 2 years.

check/replace the heat sink compound. cheaper materials will degrade with age.
