planting tropical trees in the states?
    #4218194 - 05/25/05 01:05 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Heya guys, i've been missin this section of the forums for weeks! I've been wondering, if you grow certain plants to be tree size, such as Yopo, Kratom, or Mimosa hostilis, is it possible to plant them outdoors for the rest of their life? Like, here in colorado, where the winters are fairly cold. I'd think a lot of trees would be able to adapt, and be healthy and strong enough. Any input?

Edit: I know now that most brugmansias can't grow here in colorado, they can't be in freezing temperatures.

Nope but you can take them in every year. pruning and 4 or five gallon pots will keep them maintainable though.

Well, is it possible to adapt other plants to the colorado environment? Like Desmanthus illinoensis, or different strains of Brugmansia? There's datura and brugmansia here already, but i'm sure there are more tropical strains. I live in a town with LOTS of vegetation and greenery, but it has cold winters.

Can a 5 year old yopo tree grown indoors adapt to outdoor conditions in north georgia if you mulch the roots real good each year to protect from cold and freeze?
