Chappelle Reportedly Checks Into Facility By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - Comedy Central star Dave Chappelle has checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday.


The comedian's whereabouts and condition have been unknown since Comedy Central abruptly announced last week that the planned May 31 launch of the third season of "Chappelle's Show" had been postponed and production halted.

Chappelle flew from Newark, N.J., to South Africa on April 28 for treatment, said the magazine, quoting a source close to the show it would not identify. Entertainment Weekly said it had corroborating sources for its story.

"We don't know where he is," Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox said. "We've heard about South Africa. We don't know. We haven't talked to Dave."

Chappelle's spokesman, Matt Labov, would not comment on the magazine's story.

"It seems like the issues he's contending with are really quite serious," said Dade Hayes, a senior editor at Entertainment Weekly. "It isn't a case of him spending a weekend someplace recuperating from exhaustion."

The magazine's sources say Chappelle is still in the facility, which was not named, Hayes said. Chappelle's representatives have denied that the comedian was abusing drugs.

Chappelle reportedly signed a $50 million deal with Comedy Central for two more seasons of his show, a payday made possible because of the explosive sales of the show's first season DVD.

The magazine said Chappelle had shot four to five episodes' worth of sketches for the new season, but none of its onstage introductions.

I heard the guy who broke the story talking about it this morning on the radio before it came out. It turns out that this place isn't just a mental health institute, it is basically an insane asylum for the severely mentally ill. The whole thing is strange.

I saw it coming from the beggining. All those re-runs. Every one in the world watching his every move, expecting every episode to be funnier than the last.
You'd crack under that kind of pressure too.

but than again all these mysterious rumors might just be hype to create anticipation, for the next season.

I guess it could just be a tasteless joke.

However, for some reason, the first thing that went through my head when I heard he was missing for months was that he probably had a breakdown. He had just signed that huge contract and had some serious obligations to follow through on.

I usually don't give a fuck about celebrity drama but this just fascinates me for whatever reason.

Hmm...I never thought he was that funny. I always felt like he was contributing to the stereotypes that keep people thinking potheads are stupid, while recognizing that he himself is probably pretty enlightened about things.

To be honest, I think a major factor was that his racially motivated comedy was being called into question and he didn't really know what else to do because thats what made the show a hit. It is reported that 5 episodes were made before things started going downhill between him and comedy central. Of course im just speculating but this is based off the fact that I, personally, found his show hilarious at the beginning but the constant racial comedy was getting monotonous and distasteful IMO. Some sources close to him said that these "differences" between him and the network were partially responsible.

I think we are going to hear a lot more about this before it is all over.

My question is why in the fuck would you go to South Africa to get medical treatment isn't that country shady as hell?

For sure! His comedy had a pretty large impact on society, too. I can't possibly count the times, all over the U.S., that I heard somebody saying, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" I hope things work out for him.
