Horse Poo Prep and Storage
    #4097178 - 04/25/05 10:59 PM (12 years, 7 days ago)

I have some questions regarding horse poo preparation and storage. I've got a nice tub full of unleached poo right now which I don't plan on using for a while. My problem right now is that there are a bunch of flies living in it, definately not very desirable. I'm not sure if leaching will kill them, and pasteurization I hear is something you want to do just before you spawn it otherwise it gets contaminated. What should I do in the meantime?

I don't believe it's completely dry right now. Would leaching and thoroughly drying it allow me to store it safely without it getting infested over 3 months? Can I pasteurize now, store, and then pasteurize again later or does that ruin the quality of the substrate?

I have read Shirley Knott's and Agar's big threads about the subject, by the way.

No need to pasteurize now, just leech and dry for long term storage, then pasteurize when ready to spawn. Once you have dry manure on your hands, the problems you mentioned will go away. Anything leftover after that will die when you go to pasteurize.

make sure its dried out before you store it. Spread it out in on a tarp in the sun and stir it around over a few days. I had white little insect eggs in my dung once but after an oven bag pasteurization they were all dead n sterile.

^^^ Yup, just dry it until it is "cracker dry". It will store for years that way.
