maybe you guys can settle this for me and my friend..
I am positive this song is about abortion,,,most likely about kurt and courtney contemplating abortion of frances..(pennyroyal tea is known as the best DIY abortion technique,,,second to the old hanger method..)
my friend says it's about kurts chronic stomach pains, (pennyroyal tea is also good for that..)
if you look at the album art for in utero, which is the album that includes pennyroyal tea, you see fetuse's with noose's around there necks aswhell various other "clues" in the video for heart shaped box..
what do you all think??

lyrics:
I'm on my time with everyone I have very bad posture
Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea Distill the life that's inside of me Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty
Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld So I can sigh eternally I'm so tired I can't sleep I'm a liar and a thief Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty
I'm on warm milk and laxatives Cherry-flavored antacids Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea Distill the life that's inside of me Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty

For the life of me I can't tell what ANY song of kurt's is about. Specially "Smells like a teen spirit".
Maybe Polly and Dumb, but that's about it.

it's about a lot of things. I hate when people say what a song is about- it's a song and you should interpret it at a personal level. ehh nevermind
the standard answer, and the one that kurt apparently said was the direct subject matter himself, was that he heard about a news story where a little girl was basically caged and things done to her, like the song says.
what do I think it's about? I think it's a pessimistic existentialist statement about humanity, like a lot of nirvana's songs. dont get me wrong, i love pessimistic existentialism.

Polly is, in Kurdt's words, about a woman who was abducted in Washington state sometime in the 70s or 80s. She was held captive (like a bird in a cage) by her captor and rapped repeatedly (sp?). One day, she slipped her bonds, grabbed an axe, killed him with it, and escaped.
I really like the line ...it amazes me the will of instinct. The whole song the guy is treating her like an animal, and when she escapes and is killing him, he is "amazed" by her instinct to survive. Even when she's escaped he still is considering her as an animal.

Pennyroyal Tea I believe was seen as a painreliever. Ancient. I do not think that song was about abortion although there are clues that lead you to think that.

wrong...Kurt wrote the majority of the song before he met Courtney.
so you can probably throw that one out of the mix.
go check out some of the nirvana boards...you will probably find your answer there.

it's about neither entirely. the debate you two are having isn't really a logical one. both of you should just forget about it and take the lyrics for what they are. let me explain a little, kurt wrote his lyrics by picking different lines from his poems so there are many different subject matters in them. and many of his songs don't even have real meanings to them. many of the songs in the same way have multiple meanings. some were intended to be this way and some were not as he just picked from his poems sometimes without knowing what the song was to be about. a lot of the time he wrote his lyrics right before recording.
