I'd like to introduce everybody to my new favorite music style. POST ROCK! Post rock is a very broadly defined music style, Simon Reynolds described it as music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and powerchords." It's a relatively new music style, and very experimental. The bands vary in style from tweaky electronic to orchestral performances, but generally the music flows very smoothly with nice transitions rather than abrubt changes. Here's some band recommendations:
Must haves:
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor
- A Silver Mount Zion
- Sigur Ros
- Mogwai
- Mum
- Tortoise
- Four Tet
- Cyann & Ben
Other recommendations:
- Do Make Say Think
- Arab Strap
- Xiu Xiu
- Books
- Explosions in the Sky
- Dirty Three
- Efterklang
- KC Accidental
- Max Richter
- Mono
- Papa M
- Valley of the Giants
- Radiohead (some)
I like ALL the bands above, and there's a lot of other post rock around, but it's pretty obscure. If anybody wants any of these albums, message me and I'll add you to my Soulseek user list so you can download from me. My Soulseek username is [edit]

Damn, thats some good stuff. I've been into GY!BE, Mogwai, and Sigur Ros for awhile, and recently got into Explosions in the Sky, but haven't heard of some of those others. Listening to Mum right now, really cool stuff. Thanks for the recommendations. Too bad my campus internet connection blocks p2p. I'll have to get those albums from you later when I go home for christmas break.

well, I would say you have given a good list. I will check some of the stuff you mentioned. I want to add to the list:
Slowblow(anyone watch noi albinoi? )
the album leaf(electronic side also)
her space holiday(these two are bit on the electronic side but both artists to check out)
low (definetly emotional)
telefon tel aviv(again more elctronic)
the black heart procession(yeah classic)
the arcade fire(oo yeah)
tristeza(some on rock side, some on electronic)
a very varied list but all artists to check out imo. some will definetly appeal to you. and I must add explosions in the sky and godspeed are some of the finest musical offerings of our generation.

Heya again. I know in the earlier post I've gone out of post rock recommendations and this one is going to be similar but just wanted to mention it. Anyone have a chance to listen to ISIS? Their music is simialr to that of explosions in the sky packed with lots of emotion. It has a brutal vocal which could probably dirturb a lot of people (I am myself not a fan of brutal vocals but I dont mind them in ISIS, although I have to admit I listened to a lot of screamo back in the day, stuff like saetia). Anyways, check them out, its pretty hard and heavy stuff but its very emotional at the same time. Recommended.

I'd broaden the name of the pseudo-genre to
post-modern rock

M?m and Sigur Ros are great, but I think they're more ambient than post rock. Post rock's really a bit of a ridiculous genre really, because bands that sound nothing alike could both be considered post rock. Decoder Ring are another band I guess you could call post rock, though they use a lot of synths. They did the soundtrack to the movie Somersault, check it out.

Mum and sigur ros are really fucking great..agaetis byrjun and finally we are no one are two really good albums..
I agree post rock is a some what ridiculous term, the second link vake posted has red red meat and califone listed as post rock, i guess they could be, red red meats 4th album i could see being called post rock, but the rest of califone and red red meat are more of an blues/electronic-fuckery hybrid,,, there my favourite band. (see there label in my sig.)
as they described them o nthere label site: "nobody cross-pollinates the blues, folk music and broken electronic instruments like califone... from the carcass of red red meat comes a series of gorgeous and personal hymnals delivered with the electro-rustic vocabulary of one of america's most original bands..."

VAKA I saw a very Mogwai-esque band from Japan last night - MONO. If you dig all those listed, you will dig Mono. Careful though, there's an older band called Mono too that disbanded that sounds nothing like them, don't end up with those mp3s.

Yeah, post rock is the like only subset of the indie rock genre that I find to be mostly listenable. Tortoise is my #1 favorite band, and most of my other favorites could be categorized as post rock as well. It's basically a grouping of people that make music by whatever means possible, regardless of genre convention, but like the wikipedia description says, generally centered around rock instrumentation, which I find to be really the only redeeming quality of rock. I like to consider My Bloody Valentine somewhat post rock-ish, even though I suppose they really aren't, because "non rock music made with rock instrumentation" is a good way to descibe some of their best stuff, like "To Here Knows When," and "I Only Said." Most other indie rock and especially indie pop I find pretty painful to listen to.
