digital SLR cameras??
    #4022892 - 04/06/05 08:41 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

So I grew up with my mom's 1980 Minolta x700 SLR camera.. had three lenses.. the regular 50mm, a 28mm wide angle, and a telephoto 50-200mm zoom

I love it. I'm going back to school this fall for photography.. second bachelor's. I'm striving to be a photojournalist. I need to keep up with the times, but I'm a poor ass college student again.

Anyone have any digital SLR cameras out there between 500-1000 they think are pretty good. I remember hearing that the canon rebel was the first one to go digital and price below 1000 bucks.... but there seems to be a lot to chose from now.

Anyone got any advice? Anyone know of any good digital SLR deals where you get get a free lense or two with the purchase of a digital SLR camera?

I don't need anything too fancy. Just a basica digi slr to use throughout college to get aquainted with.

for less than a grand you won't really find a DSLR that's very decent. The body of the rebel is like 700 or 770 with a 18-55mm (prices from newegg) . From what i've heard, the rebel isn't really that good but when the time to upgrade comes you just need a new body since all the canon lenses are interchangable.

the EOS 10d is pretty nice for a relatively low investment, i've shot with it and it's pretty good. It needs alot of light for pictures to come out well but it's cool. The 20d is the 8.2 megapixel and is about 1500 with 18-55mm lense. I don't know if I would go with an 8mp camera, they're relatively new sensors and are still a bit grainy, I have a sony cybershot f828 that is 8mp and it takes awesome pics when the iso setting is 200 or below.

Oh..and before you buy a digital slr, make sure the college you're going to allows the use of DSLRs. alot of school still require the use of a 35mm for photography classes. Good luck.

Yea I just found it. The Canon Digital Rebel EOD 20D

It's the pimped out version of the digital rebel. Most placed have it for 1200 or so (with the lense), but I managed to find it for about 600 in canada. God DAYAMN that's pretty cheap...

it's 8 megapixels and does 5 frames per second (3 is the regular rebel speed)

I have the Digital Rebel which is excellent. With the hacked firmware it is pretty much equivalent to the EOS 10D a $1000+ camera. Hacked firmware gives mirror lock-up important for macro shots and flash exposure compensation among other things.

6.3 megapixels is fine for most applications. It's doubtful a person would see a difference between 8 and 6.3 megapixels at 8x10.

Read the reviews on the Digital Rebel compared to Nikon and Sony. It usually comes out as number one.

Unless you plan on printing posters I would look for the Digital Rebel. Also the new Digital Rebel XT does not have hacked firmware as of yet so you lose many of the extra features available on the Digital Rebel. You can find one on ebay for under $600 with the EF-S 18-55 lens. Mine ended up being under $600 including shipping and I bought a high speed 1gig CF card for $60.
