Fridge Modification
    #4019765 - 04/06/05 01:40 AM (12 years, 20 days ago)

Woo hoo, I just scored a small fridge for free. And it works!  :ooo:

I am hoping that those of you that have modified fridges to act as fruiting chambers could give me some tips. Fiddling with gizmos like this is not my strong suit. I'm eager to get this fruiter in operation so I can get to work fruiting a Psilocybe cyanescens print that I acquired through a trade.

For cased substrates, a golf ball size light bulb very low watt (xmass type works)for light. A coolmist (spinning type - not ultrasonic) piped into it it with 3/4 or 1 inch pvc & thats about it.

If you have normal room temps, the light on a 12/12 timer cycle will keep it in about the right temp ranges (74/76 on & 70/72 off). Coolmist will provide 84 / 86% rh range & fresh air exchange.

BE SURE THE BOTTOM DRAIN FUNCTIONS & you set a drain pan under it. Air exchange driven by coolmist will will vent out drain, as will any excess moisture.

If there is NO drain. Drill 1/2 hole through bottom & use tubing to install one.

Drilling the hole to pipe in the coolmist is the modification that takes a little ingenuity & some tools (drill/bit/round-file/silicone).

Simple as that.

Any other Q's..... just ask.

27 cubic foot upright freezer below. Will hold 20 trays.

Look RIGHT HERE:

Mine is an old model. Above link is new model & better yet. Easy to modify with PVC pipe & can be filled without removing the top.

WalMart, kMart, Target & most of the big chain Mart's have or can order one.

Very nice man. Can that fridge hold in the cold? I've been thinking about something similar for enoki and other cold lovers for out of season.

If you need temperature control, get one of these, either the Johnson Controls or the Ranco themperature controller:

It is a FREEZER. It works. Can generate/hold enough COLD.... to freeze meat SOLID - if need be. On 5 minutes & it's down to 50F.
I have a Honeywell thermostat.

Nice thermostat....

Think.......upright FREEZER

Not Fridge

Upright freezer has more open shelf space (21 cubic feet).

Start calling around to appliance repair places.

They OFTEN have DEAD ONES.........FOR FREE. It costs them, to have dead ones hauled off.

YOU CANNOT BEAT.............FREE

Look for the 21 or 21 cubic foot ones.

Sometimes the big stores (CostCo, Lowes, etc) have BRAND NEW scratched up, dented or dead freight damaged ones....FOR FREE.

If you can feel a breeze comming from it...its a cool mist and you dont need to fan. If just a SOLID thick fog with no air force behind it comes out, its ultrasonic.
