Check your local hydroponics shops. I dont know if this is the same stuff but a website lists this material (Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (L.E.C.A.). I dont know if it is the same but the price is 2$ per pound.

It is the same stuff used in the HydraPod. Its like puffed clay material, it is normally used in advanced hydroponics setups as a replacement for other such material.

how bout a few dollar store tupperwares to permenantly store perlite in. Just leave the lids off till it's dry, then, bam! put the lids back on, and it's ready for storage.

So... It will work if you just keep it hydrated, correct?

I saw this stuff a long time ago marketed simply as 'clay pellets' in a hydroponics shop.
