Red Contam

Just curious, a friend innoculated some jars, 2 from the same syringe showed an aggressive growth of Red Contam. Because of lazyness/curiousity, this friend let the jar go for a while, now mycelium has been growing for the last 3-4 days and is starting to take over the red contam. Is it even possible for the mycelium to come back and destroy the contams? Or is this a lost cause?

in my experience the mycelium just covered the red shit but the red doesn't show an agressive growth for me...

The exact thing happened on my last batch. I was told by someone on here (i forget who) that the contamination you are seeing is called "Lipstick mold" or something like that. It looks like someone went in the jar and literally smeared some lipstick on the mycelium. After I decided to try and salvage them by just cutting away all the red I got about 1/10 of all my jars. It was dissapointing. I'm not sure how far along your mold is, but mine was so overblown that when I broke the cake open it was teeming with red mold and starting to rot from the middle out. When from the outside it only looked like it was little crimson spots between the mycelium and jar. I'm thinking this is one of those contams that when you see it, it may be too late... Although this happens, do salvage... I can't tell you what'll happen yet, cause i'm still in the process of trying to save them, but when I cased the little bit I could salvage (which was on 9-12) I looked at them today and the mycelium is growing pretty well (however a bit slow). I think that is chaulked up to it's rough colonization in the jar what with that mold and such. I'm going to start enducing humidity and a light cycle tomorrow. I will be very cautious about these when and if they fruit... Give them a good lookover, Maybe give them to someone and see what happens... :-) just kidding. hope that helps, I can keep you posted on them if you want me to (PM me)... If not, no biggie. but i say start scraping the red off and case those suckers. cheers, abudiwa

My very first attempt at growing B+ jars got strange red dots in them that the mycelium overgrew completely

in theory, in the proper part of the mycelieal life-cycle, our friends can digest anything organic, dead or alive, short of plastic. in the real world, having dealt with quite a lot of lipstick mold, it is perhaps one of the only types that P cubensis can overcome in the proper conditions. even if it does overcome it, growth and fruiting will be slow and unimpressive. on a well colonized substrate, cut out everything that resembles red and the surrounding areas, cut out all uncolonized substrate. if it still looks like a cake, then you can use it as one, on the other hand you can crumble and case, but case with a completely inert casing material and one should do so lightly because dormant mold should not be allowed to sneek out. apply some H2O2 to discourage spores. failing that, to the backyard it goes.

This is my first batch of shrooms and I am having red contamination in one of my jars out of 12 (so far). my mycelium is growing sorta slowly from what I understand. So from what you guys are saying the Mycelium might take it over. and I should not throw it out?

Well my friends jar which was quite badly contaminated with the red contam is quickly and agressively being over taken by very nice rhizo mycelium. Very little is left of the red contam and considering that originally there was probably about 20-30% of the jar that was infected, now it looks to be less than 5%. Either way, my friend wants to see what happens, caution is being taken of course

Thor, I had that problem once. It seems that I only got 2 small flush's before Another contam took over. This may are may not happen to your friend. However, I have to agree that providing the right conditions, one might overcome the red mold. just watch and see.

i've seen my mycellium beat the ass of infections on several occasions, yet i have never tried to fruit them inside after they are initially infected.... i would figure casing such a jar would just be asking for trouble.
