wal mart pisses me off

tonight i traveled all the way to the local wal mart which is 40 minutes away and they didnt have any perlite or brf!!! can you bilieve that? any way i know where to pick up brf but where is a good place to pick up perlite? thanks in advance!

perlite you can go to a gardening store- or a hardware store with a gardening section.

brown rice flour you can get at some supermarkets - check either in the bulk bin section, organic section, or flour/baking section. organic co-ops/health stores often have it too. if you cant find it then (or dont wanna keep searching) you can buy organic brown rice and grind it yourself.

Verm is hard to find. Call around to garden shops before getting in the car.

My friend bought long grain brown rice and ground it himself in a coffee bean grinder. He's sure that his VERY fast colonization (11 days) was b/c the nutrients were freshly prepared.

I've had no trouble at all with vermiculite or perlite. I find them at Lowe's every time. Couldn't find either at Walmart, and only vermiculite at Home Depot.

I discovered the same thing. My local Wallmart dosent sell Perlite. When I asked the girl that worked in the garden department she looked at me like she had never heard of it before and asked me "what's it used for".. shesh

Actually Verm and Perl are both hard to find out of season anywhere but a nursery. I know this because i went on a 5 store quest today for both of them only to find out at the nursery (my fifth stop) the reason why. I got the last bag of both too! :-)

You have enough advice for verm. So i'll give you some advice for BRF. I always use "UNCLE BENS" long grain brown rice, and then i grind it up in a coffee grinder. Actually I don't even do that any more. Now I just use the rice whole, and then add dark rye flour to the mix. Works like a champ!

any advantage to using dark rye flour vs just the
brf? if so, where do I get it? I've been grinding

The workers at the stores usually have no idea about verm/perl. Sometimes they sell verm as 'fake ash' for fireplaces. That's how I got mine.

The mycl. to P. cubies seem to like this. I just happen to use my own mix, and thats what it consists of. Flax seed also. When I fist started to grow (some time ago) nobody was using flaxx seed, only a few certain people. Now alot of people seem to take a liking to it. I'm not trying to take claim for it(by all means, someone told me about it), just trying to help.
I don't know who came up with it...but it works :)

iran into the same thing at my local walmart they didn't have either, verm or perlite. and when i asked about they looked at me weird too. verm and perlite are both used to aerate compact soil so i told them i needed it for this. and as for brf i got it at akins health food store first try. my local home depot had perlite but no verm. go figure. but i had the hardest time finding JARS!! i couldn't find 1/2 pint wide mouth jars to save my life. so i went with1/4 pint jars i hope they work!
