A few tips for you new folks

Although none of this infomation is new, I have found the following few things to be very helpful, especially when starting out in this fun and incredibly rewarding hobby of ours.
1) Read all you can. This site is THE mushroom library of the world.
2) When mixing the substrate, Its better to be a bit dry than too wet. I like to mix the brown rice flower and vermiculite together before I add water. Then, I slowly add water, take a ball of it, and squeeze it VERY hard in my hand. When it clumps together, it is ready.
3) I have found that 8 jars per syringe is the best to start out with. Once you get some experience, try 10 jars, and eventually 12 per syringe.
4) Do yourself a favor, and buy a can of Clorox Disinfecting Spray (I like the Sunshine Breeze scent). Spray this stuff all around your workspace, and it kills almost every nasty bacteria in the air, and on surfaces. Also, make sure to wash your hands or wear gloves!
5) The "Low Dollar Sterile Technique" works wonders. It is in the Grow/Find section, under "miscellaneous documents"
6) When innoculating your jars, make sure to TURN YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU BREATH! The human mouth harbors more bacteria than anywhere else, even your asshole!
7) A rubbermaid bin, humidified with perlite, is the easiest way to go when it comes time to fruit. (Also really cheap)
8) Grow on cakes your first time. You'll get plenty of mushrooms, and won't have to worry about any of the hassles that go along with casing.
I have done dozens of jars this way, and rarely even loose one. So read some more, order those syringes, and get into the hobby, its easier than you think. And by the way, the mushrooms you will grow yourself blow ever other kind of psychedelic out of the water. Everybody on this board can attest to that.
Enjoy,
Sam

I agree with everything you say. Here are some more tips:
Use a good "glug glug" of H202 in your perlite water.
Sporeprint on tinfoil whiped with alcohol.
Experiment with substrate water ratios.
If your not pressure cooking, make sure your pot lid is air tight. This can take 15 minutes off your boiling time.

Yes he is giving good sound info, but when I first started I HAD NO luck getting cakes to fruit very well. When I went to cassing I had much greater results.I Pesonaly beleive if as a beginner you are not having luck with fruiting cakes,go with a strait verm case, dont be afraid just dont stray from the proven ways of doing your case.allthough I have tried some new things and,you can to as a beginer start with a proven simple verm method.PEACE AND LUCK BE WITH YOU.GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
Why did I eat to many, now I have falling and I cant get up.For now I have seen both heaven and, hell.Come with me and,eat flesh of the gods....

Some really good stuff here...
However I have to say that I belive it will be harder for a newbie to fruit from cakes. I've been growing now for 3 yrs. maybe 4 who's counting...Anyway I kept reading that cakes were for the newbie. So I tried and tried, and always ended up failing. So then I cased and like magic they came up :)
Well 4 yrs. later thats all I'll ever use....casings that is. Cakes can just flat out be to damn stubbern. As long as the newbie is clean as possible, and follows the right way, then I think the'll be just fine.
