Clorox

Hello everybody, and thanks for having me.

I would like to share a technique that I have not seen mentioned elsewhere.

I add 1% or more of Clorox (as in "a splash") to the water in the grain spawn jars before sterilization. This seems like overkill, since chlorine is an effective bactericidal at a concentration of parts-per-million. It probably is overkill, but the fact is that after an hour soaking in that solution, the grain may be already sterilized.

Then I take advantage of the fact that chlorine evaporates at a very low temperature, so after an hour at 121 degrees C (250 F or so) there is no chlorine left in the grain. In the meantime, I'm treating the bad guys to an atmosphere of superheated chlorine gas.

I have used this technique with rye grain of several different sources and never had any contamination.

Only "Regular" Clorox should be used, there is a fancy one that other chemicals that are not good for the mycelia.

I don't think soaking grain in bleach water for an hour will sterilize it. It takes more than an hour to soak into the middle of the grain. Any chlorine gas would also go right out the polyfil/tyvek hole in the top of the jar so the grains aren't sitting around in a chlorine environment.

While it is true that it would take longer than an hour for the Clorox to soak into the middle of the grain, that is not necessary, since the bacteria and spores are in the surface.

Also, in an All American pressure cooker the chlorine gas remains inside, since no steam (or anything) is released.
