5 tips for newbies
    #1494149 - 04/25/03 08:46 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Big ups go out to 'Alien' for starting my friends turtle - 'Mojo' on the path to enlightenment a couple of years ago. His tips are:

1. Move from BRF to grains or any reasonable facsimile thereof, eg: RYE, birdseed, millet, popcorn. Use qts instead of pint jars. Move to bags after you master qt jars. Get a pressure cooker, 22 qt will hold 10 qt jars. 7 standing up, 3 in a triangle pattern laying on their sides on top of the seven.

2. Fill jars 3/4 full to facilitate shaking. They'll be done in 2-3 weeks. Use tyvek for a cheap filter and skip the verm. Buy tyvek suits at most hardware stores. Envelopes work too but are much more expensive than a tyvek suit. They are used for asbestos removal, painting, etc. If no suit, find tyvek house wrap. One layer is sufficient. Tinfoil. For folks with lots of contam rates try innoc'ing through tin foil after swabbing with alcohol. Of course use all normal precautions... flaming needle, clean environment. Put in at least 4cc and tape hole immediately after innoc'ing.
For extra security from contams cool down jars in a plastic garbage bag. They suck air while cooling. Contammed jars generally start with a contammed innocing surface, not the syringe - remember: the hole created by a syringe to one bascillus bacteri is equivalent to a golf ball sitting on the 50 yd line of TWO football fields side by side. For storing jars milk crates work great - they'll hold 9 qts.

3. Case Case Case. Cakes require less space but casing produces more. Most casing teks will do. Verm's worst, 50/50 is accessible, coco is easy and produces, straw and dung best. Mojo uses coco. To aid in the 'shrinkage' of casings line the casing tray with tinfoil or saran. If you're using aluminum pans the layer of tinfoil will protect your trays from degrading. Baking the trays before filling will also help kill contams. Prepare all substrates with protection - gloves, suit, showercap, and if at all possible case with a flow hood. Outside will work, or an open window with a draft coming in towards you.
Give your casings a good watering between flushes ( a kind of dunk if you will ).

4. Become self sufficient. Take prints. Just before caps go 'horizontal' take the print. Twist a wood screw into the cap and then cut stem close to cap. Allow at least 12 hrs for spores to drop. Fold prints and put in sandwich bag. Always allow syringes time to rehydrate the spores, overnight, even if your print is still damp from taking it. They'll work if you don't but it'll save time. Move to 60cc syringes. They go farther. Pressure cook your syringes before reusing.

5. Air. Higher CO2 levels are good but too much and it can be disasterous. Better more air than none. Humidity.
Watch your shrooms, learn how they grow, more often than not, they can tell you what they need. Listen to them.

And the turtle has one more tip...

6. Patience... Not just in waiting for pins. But waiting for the experience to mount. This is not a one month project. Many mycologists on this board will testify that this hobby takes years to master and there is always more to learn. The road you embark on is not a short one. It takes perseverance for your efforts to pay off.

I miss Anno.

WOW... I'm a newby on my first grow and I must give props on the post. I'd like to tell you this will be my first "favorite thread" tagged. This seems to summarize many tips I hear from experts.

Fugu, we all miss Anno. But he's still around and you know that he never made meaningless posts. Instead of "ask ask ask" he'd say "Read the FAQ".
