Gigabit Ethernet

Does anyone have it? And if so is it worth it?

Yes. No.

As far as I understand gigabit ethernet really won't show any difference unless you're on a super fast connection or network. It's more geared towards the future internet with faster speeds.

That's what I figured after reading abit about the technology. The motherboard i'm looking at has it built in, so I figure I'll just go with it. It's nice having a motherboard with tonnes of upgradability.

my motherboard has one at 100, and one at 1000, built-in...unfortunately it's shit if the other people on your network are still using 100 since it defaults to the lower speed.

Yes. Yes.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Yes. Depends on what you are doing. Gigabit ethernet is great for internal network backbones or when you have to sling large gig+ files around between local machines. If you are simply browsing the net through your cable modem, then no, it is not worth it.

I get 6500kbps over my local network, i really don't see the use for anything faster.

Now when The Grid (Intarweb II) comes along, it will come in handy.

It doesn't cost any more than 10/100 in my experience, so how could it NOT be worth it?

Of course my cable modem can't serve anything up that fast, but it could be very nice for a LAN.

my DFI mobo is a Lanparty Ultra 2 with gigabit eithernet built in along with an additional standard nvidia ethernet controler, so i got 2 wich is good for hosting servers but you'll only benifit from gigabit connections when sharing LARGE files, not downloading, not gaming just files if both cards AND the cable support the gigabit connection.
