Does amount of light affect number of pins?

I'm growing taz strain cubensis in rubbermaid bins in my closet. Normally I would assume the cakes receive light, and then pin, no matter what amount of light they get. However, because of stealth reasons I now have to give the cakes light with only a 6v bulb attached to a 300 mA transformer (that's like 2 watts) and it seems like the cakes are pinning sluggishly, and only on the sides that face the light. Will increasing the light slightly be able to increase the number of pins? Or does any amount of light that can make cakes pin cause them to pin as much as possible? Thanks for any help you can offer.

light tells the cake to pin. so does increasing air exchange/reduction of co2, and a drop in temperatures (so its a range of factors, not just light, etc.) if you can rule out that its not another physical factor, concentrate on the light and your prollem may be resolved. id nornally say that just a little light is enough, but since it sounds like parts of the cake arent receiving any at all and those are the parts that arent pinning, it points to a lack of light (which, in HQ's experience, is strange- she constantly is combatting pins on the sides of opaque casing containers, where no light is...) sounds like youre trying for absolute stealth, but id pull the bin out for a little bit each day so they could get some light- perhaps pulling the top off and allowing for ambient light would be enuf to alleviate your prollem. or replace another light source which can illuminate all sides of the cakes, even if its relatively weak. you also may have just a sluggish strain (sorry!)... also, you didnt say how long theyve been pinning; if its been only a few days id say to wait and see. gluck

According to "The Mushroom Cultivator", cubes are dependent on light to help initiate the pinning process and to give the critters a "direction" in which to grow. They recommend a 12 on / 12 off cycle. I think what may matter here is the type of light you are using. "Someone" I know uses a grow light with a bluish color to it and has never had a problem. That certain "someone" is also certain that other factors could be contributing to your problems, just not positive. Hopefully someone else will have a decent contribution for you. MeanMark
