first off, go to http://www.shroomery.com/findorgrowthem.php?View=docs&doc=51 a tek that claims to yield much more potent mushies with the addition of polymers to the substrate. maybe i just missed it the 3 or 4 times i read it butu what type of polymers are they referring to? if you know anything about chem then you know that theres about 40 bazillion polymer chains in nature and how exactly do they help? im pretty sure tryptonine is a polymer, so this would prolly be the ideal polymer but im just unsure on that tek, its very poorly written in my opinion, just some vague info. can anyone help?

Good question! You might try calling around garden shops or nurseries. A polymer can be just about any chain of molecules. Sorry, I couldn't be more help.

i think that it is talking about the type that you can add to potting soil as a water retainer. they start off in pieces the size of a grain of sand and grow to the size of almost a marble. i hope this helps unfortunatly i dont know where to find them at.

I'm pretty sure the polymer people have been referring to is polyacrylamide. I bought some of this before, marketed as 'water crystals' and the ingredients included mostly polyacrylamide but had another similar component that I can't remember off the top of my head.

The biggest problem in my view is an environmental one, polyacrylamide is relatively inert, but when it breaks down into its monomers [acrylamide] it is extremely toxic. This breakdown might not affect you, but is a pretty shitty thing to dump outside, as our little micro-friends will have to deal with it.

On a similar note, if one makes polyacrylamide for DNA/protein separation, you have to be very careful, wear gloves, work in a fume hood, etc.

A good rule, not often followed [but should be] is to consider the 'throw away cost' of anything you're considering using.

theyre called water crystals... yeah, the ones that swell. HQ used them mixed in a casing material a while back, not in substrate. but, it should be noted that though they are inert and do hold a lot of water, they also wick that water out where needed and shrink back to that tiny size. so they werent that helpful in rehydrating the casing layer- b/c it took a lot of water to glut them up again, which means spraying the casing a lot more than you would with a "light misting".

in substrate jars id worry if they would shrink during colonization, as the myc will wick water from it- and air exchange would lead to its shrinkage as well.

plus... dog food? :) i know they use it in agar, but ew... dog breath shrooms. hehe...

aah, i see. but has anyone ever heard of this working to increase potency at all, or just to reservoir water? i was looking more along the lines of how polyacrylamide (an alkaloid???) can assist in the production of our friends psylocybin and psilocin. maybe i should look for this answer in the advanced cult. forum but this is only like my third post and i didnt think i had moved to that status yet :). i probably shouldnt be worrying about this anyway, im still looking for success in the MMGG method... well thanks anyways guys, least i know what they are referring to now.

I'm not even sure if the author was saying it would increase potency but rather merely saying the resulting shrooms would be potent. Potent as in not unpotent one can only assume! Looks like just another water holding alternative like you suggest.
