after innoculating dung in a tray with colonized grain, and placing aluminum foil over the tray does one poke holes in the foil? how many times a day should you fan? if at all..

thanx.

It depends on the size of the trays, it poke one hole every 1.5" or so but i think you can also do it without holes when you start. No fanning needed when with foil

Peace,

Yes, poke a few holes. Don't start fanning until the dung is about 30% colonized. Remove the foil, also.

what do you mean "remove the foil also"??
when fanning.... or all together?
if all together won't contams be a problem??

Take the foil off when the casing is partially colonized. Fan, with the aquarium lid. Contams can pop-up at almost any time. Once cased, the substrate and/or casing layer is no longer sterile.

i am guessing puscle means youve cased the colonized substrate with dung, and that contams wont be able to hit the substrate. from what i hear, teh dung will colonize but is stil considered a casing layer that is much better at resisting contamination. the foil may or may not be necessary, mostly depending on the environment IMHO. if youve got the tray in a shelf in your room and you have a fan going and dust flying around id leave it on with mbe a few holes or something. if its fairly clean in teh area its prolly not necessary. but when you see myc popping up then keep it ventilated/fanned if possible- no need to worrry about mold by then.
