Mycelium Syringes and the PDA Tech.

Ok here is the situation: A well known vender's lab has just anounced that they will only replace containamanted syringes when they are tried with the PDA (potatoe,Dextrose,Agar) tech. The PDA tech. appears to be basicly growing the mycelium on top of, what I like to call, potatoe soup 1/2 filled in 1/2 pint jars. The plans conclude that by useing there mycelium suspension syringes with the PDA tech. that up to 4 oz's of mycelium can be produced that is the same strength as 'shrooms. Perhaps it is, but is this method any superior to say the PF TEK? The inplication is that the brown rice method some how promotes containamation. Is there any reason that a mycelium suspension syringe would not work with the PF TEK method? We suspect that it's a distraction from a badly containamated batch or so of syringes. If anyone has any expeirence with mycelium suspension syringes (they are legal- they are barely more than geramanated spores that are a few days old from what I gather) and/or the PDA tech. please reply to this post. It is VERY dificult to find any information on either of these subjects. Thanks.

No, it works better and faster as the spore syringe.

I suspect you are right about the syringes being contaminated. PDA is a selective medium used to grow fungi. It has a high osmotic tension from the dextrose and a low pH. The sugar and acid prevent bacteria from growing but the concentrations are not so high that fungi, such as shrooms, will not grow. PDA is a good medium to use for growing mycelium from a print or syringe contaminated with bacteria but it is not the best medium for growing mycelium in quantities because the glucose and acid also reduce mycelial growth. It takes a lot of agar plates of any kind to grow a decent amount of mycelium otherwise this would be a good way to go.

Unfortunately bacteria also thrive on PDA(Potato Dextrose Agar).

Anno,
You are right. Bacteria can grow on PDA. I was thinking of another agar at the time. SDA "Sabauraud's" is the agar that grows fungi but not bacteria.
