Going to Peru & Equador in October. Thinking about hunting some prints!
    #3832729 -

I should be going to Peru, Equador and maybe Boliva or Brazil aswell this October. I'll be staying there for three months.

Thought this would be a great opportunity for me to hunt prints directly from the nature itself! :smirk:

So when do they grow over there? And what book on identification do you recommend?

when the temps are right and it's rainy

I honestly don't know what time of year that would be down there.

Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World by Stamets would probably be the most helpful book to pick up if you're after the more exotic species of psilocybe, if you just want cubes or something I wouldn't bother though.

Rainy season is July through September. Copes and liberty caps can be found in Peru and poissibly some cubes?

Not sure about the latter. Psilocybe subcubensis in Ecuador.

that seems odd, liberty caps and copelandias together

one is a cold weather species and the other is warm weather

im not doubting it, but just wondering,
maybe they are found at different altitudes
and different seasons..?

Psilocybe semilanceata has been known of from Peru for years. IT is also comon in Chili. Most Peruvian cities of fame are located high inthe Andes GGreatOne234, at high altitudes and colder weather.

Liberty caps grow in manured soil from cattle and llama and Copelandia species, as you already know, grow in manure.

btw, Liberty caps also grow in Pune, india.

I did just read in "True Hallucinations" by Mckenna that they found Cubensis in the Amazon, and it was in february!  :strokebeard:

Getting the Stamet book soon, hopefully it'll give me some dates

Perfect place for hunting cubes! There's also a few obscure species that grow in the rainforest (hoogenshinii or something). Be careful there. Get all your shots.

When I went to Trinidad I got shots for:
Hepatitis A
Yellow Fever
Tetanus
Typhoid

And I started on antimalarials. And watch out for those plants in the rainforest. They have lots of spikes and ants on them. Not to mention Bushmasters (deadly vipers). It's a dangerous world, man

Terrence and Dennis were in the Colombian Amazon. Not in the Peruvian Amazon.

The mushrooms the five travelers ate of course were Stropharia cubensis (Earle} Sing. and were collected from cow manure in a pasture at Mission La Chorrera which was established there in the Colombian Amazon in the 1920s. They were picked in a pasture clear decades before for the cattle to graze. It was only a jungle on the outskirts and onwards.

Stropharia cubensis is synonmous with Psilocybe cubensis, correct mj? Just the old taxon?

Gumby is correct. Many mycologist still consider it a Stropharia. So that is why some use either name to id the mushroom.

In Ecuador you have Psilocybe subcubensis, whose spores are smaller than psilocybe cubensis spores. So far that is the domionant species in Ecuador, and of course some Copelandia mushrooms.
