How serious do you take your dreams?

I try not to take mine too seriously, but sometimes I can't help it. I feel like sometimes I get hidden messages, "guides" from my dreams. I know that they can represent our unconsious mind, but do you think they have more meaning then that? Oh, and what do you make of the significance of dream interpretation in the Bible? Apparently dream interpreters were really valued by kings back then.

I don't relate dreams to anything in real life. I think the whole "dream interpretation" fad went a little overboard, and people made tons of money selling books to people about an occurrence that is little more then electrical signals firing off at free will in our brains throughout the course of a night.
The magic of dreams and their meaning is lost on me as I get older, it means absolutely nothing to me. Maybe it's a youth thing, thinking back to when they seemed so special and connected to something /shrug
If you feel that they are connected to something, that's cool.

if i told you how serious my dreams were to me, you very well may change your opinion of me.
dreams are very important to me.
i think when we dream we go into "analog" mode, and can travel through time, witnessing and effecting possible pasts and futures. so yes beyond the whole "subconscious symbolism" idea i think there is much more to it than that. open your eyes when you dream, and you may find out youre every bit as awake as when youre not sleeping.
symbols metaphors and direct witnessing of possible and probable curcumstance.

I think dreams definitely have meaning, but you won't get an accurate interpretation from someone else. The thought that there are standard symbols in dreams that mean the same thing for everyone is ridiculous.
Each dream is unique to the dreamer, and only you can interpret what it means. Usually, if you think about it, they're not that hard to figure out.
But there is defintely some subconscious message present there.

It all depends on the dream, some have a deeper personal meaning, some are just wacky fun!

Not very serious at all. They're usually pretty weird and sometimes frightening, but they're just dreams to me...

Not seriously, but when I can remember them, I often try to interpret what they were saying to me, and see if I can find the significance of the dream. If not, I often just write it down and forget about it.
Possibly I'll look at the dreams I've written down in the future and see the warnings and tips that were right in front of my eyes.

A dream is something that your mind wants to do "i beleave" in most cases. I try to follow what my dreams "tell me" because you never know. Some dreams are just plain stupid though.

I take my dreams very seriously.
I do not buy into the *interpert your dream with this book* phenomenon, but if your intune with yourself, its quite easy to find patterns or schemes representing real life - and unconscious/unexplored ideas.
In the east dreams are considered a powerful way to philosophize because of their uncluttered/unbiased nature...
They are favored over the waking state - as said above.
My dream life is very exciting - although enhanced with melatonin.

indeed. imo dreams are nothing but dreams and have no secret messages hidden in them. It's still very cool to dream though

I think a whole lot of my past experiences and the things I have learned from them are stored in my subconscious. I may have a lot of difficulty accessing those memories consciously, but the part of my brain that stores them sometimes feels the need to remind me of certain things--in my dreams. Not all dreams are messages, but an acute sense of honesty in dealing with your own issues makes it pretty easy to tell the difference.

i say this not believing in god and also being rather stoned.

Pathos is correct - there are no set valences for dream symbols. Those books with set dream meanings are worthless. I underwent over 8 years of Jungian analysis with 3 Zurich-trained analysts. I can self-analyze, and analyze others. I have made it my life-work to familiarize myself with as many different mythologies, religions, folk traditions and symbol systems that I could. People telling me their dreams might trigger a few associations from me, but only the analysand can say for sure which association has the most meaning.
According to depth-psychology - Freudian or Jungian - all dreams are significant symbolizations of one's current life experience. Having familiarity with the culturally-colored but universal themes and pattern that dreams illustrate (the Archetypes) can warn you about the future, define what-is-what, and guide you to future action. Of course, much of dream life expresses common anxiety or rehashes the day's events, but that 'chaff' is mixed with the 'wheat' of the 'Big Dream' which guides us. I for one have taken dreams seriously. When my best friend Paul and I were no more than 4 or 5 we would prop ourselves inside a celery-stalk-like clustered tree and tell each other our dreams. We called it 'the dream tree.'
Here we are at age 32 (1985).

I think I stated this in another post, but what the heck: I try not to take my dreams seriously, but I had a dream back in June which I took so seriously that it traumatized me and ruined almost my entire summer.
