 why do caps open?

what causes caps to open?
can it be attributed to excess CO2? not enough light/water? age, maybe?
it has to be something, right?

caps open because they have to. the gills are under the cap and they have the spores. it has to open to drop them on the ground to make more to continue the cycle.

i understand that, i'm really just interested in delaying the opening so they will grow larger. once the open they seem to stop..

most shrooms only grow to a certain extent and then about the last thing they do is open the veil. and you probably don't want them bigger as they consume more nutrients of whatever you grow them on meaning less. and also they lose potency, they are more potent before the viel opens.

Light seems to play a role in cap expansion. Shrooms I've grown in minimal light (maybe 1 or 2 mins a day) have much smaller caps and open later.
