butane lighter w/ salvia extract
    #3697808 - 01/29/05 12:28 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

does anyone KNOW if using a butane lighter to smoke salvia extract(not extract enhanced leaves) makes a noticeable difference in experience or efficiency?

Yes.

Oh, you meant to ask if it does, not if I know it does?

Salvinorin activates at a greater heat than THC, so you want to have as much heat on it as possible, the whole time... A torch lighter is good for this. If you use a normal butane lighter, be sure to keep the flame on it the whole time. Remember also to take large hits and hold them as long as you can.

ive read that when using plain leaf a butane lighter is highly encouraged, because the results will be lacking if you dont, but if it is extract, this isnt as important.

Yes. But also scientifically speaking, the activation tempurature of Salvinorin A (the chemical you are getting out of Salvia Divinorum) is relatively high, especially compared to marijauna (which is activated at sub-flammable tempuratures), so more heat = k3y here.

Then again someone may come and correct me, but I am pretty sure this is the way it is.

HERE IS THE CORRECTION:

there is no activation temperature!!!!

salvinorin-a does not become more or less active at any temperature.

HOWEVER:

the vaporization temp is high if you are trying to vaporize salvinorin-A crystal from a plate and then suck the released vapor into a glass tube; but if you have standardized material (even crude extract) in a small pipe, a regular lighter or match will work very fine (kept over the material and not cherry stoked).

high school physics remember:

when you try to boil an egg high in the mountains the water boils at too low a temperature. why? the lower pressure.
so
if you draw on your pipe you lower the local pressure and have absolutely no need of any torches to bring the salvinorin into the airstream (or smokestream).

a huge bong or long tubed water pipe will need a torch AND you will lose tons of material which will condense along the tubes.

the whole mythology of temperature is leading people to use torches needlessly and it is wrose for the lungs than the gentler smoking temperatures.

Daniel Siebert is a great guy but he is not a frequent user, and he is not wide in his general scientific insights - he is doing great work in specific directions, yet I do blame him for the wrong mythology about temperature and smoking. Right about temperature but way wrong about smoking and vaporization.

Ah, thank you for clearing that up... I misused the term activation for marijauna as well, I do believe, as it should also be vaporisation, no?

I didn't really notice a difference. If the flame of your regular BIC lighter is directly on the material, it will be hot enough. The only difference I felt between the two was when I used the torch, the hit was hotter.

With extract it is all so fucked up, with or without a torch.

I haven't noticed much of a difference....

actually when I use butane lighter it seems to vaporize a lot faster and there doesn't seem to be as much smoke in the bong..

I just use regular bic lighter and it works fine - shouldn't make much of a difference IMO
