 Astrophotography.....in the city!

Who says its not possible!
People always say there's too much light in the city to see the stars. But I managed to take a picture of the Machholtz comet from my driveway tonight....and I live in a city with a shitload of lights!
here is the picture...
The cluster of stars in the lower left is the Pleiades. And the comet is the 'fuzzy' looking point of light.
Here is an easy way to find the comet. 
And I managed to take this photo with a digital camera...no easy task when you can't see what you're shooting until the photo comes out!
Anyone else get a look at this comet yet? Or maybe even some pictures?

I remember trying to take a photo of Mars when it was visible from here...didn't work.

longer exposure time on your camera settings if you want to take photo of stars via your digital camera

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but higher exposure would create a trailing effect on the stars, would it not? Due to rotation of the earth and such and so forth?

the rotation of the earth isn't fast enough to make the stars look as if they have a trail on say a 30 sec exposed photograph. which, can be sufficient amount of time to be able to take a photo of stars (depending on the conditions).
basically the long exposure time is needed in order to compensate for the low light situation. when the exposure time is longer the camera ccd is able to absorb whatever little light there is...in this case, stars.
it's also good to have a tripod along with you when taking photos of the night sky. blurred pictures are usually the end product when you're holding the camera yourself to the sky with the long exposure

Or get an attachment for a telescope. Screw in the camera, close up shots, and instant tri-pod

Actually, you do capture some of the Earths rotation at 30 seconds. All these photos were taken on a tripod with 30 second exposures (the maximum on my digital camera). The ones above you don't really notice the movement because its a wider field of view, however if you look close you can see that the stars are slightly streaked. To better see this effect, here is a picture of the Pleiades in which I zoomed in more (again, 30 sec exposure).

You need to have your telescope/tripod motorized to rotate with the stars.

Nice! I love the stars, but trying to get pictures of them is next to impossible around here. I have managed to master holding my camera up to my crappy 1980-ish Sears catalog telescope and snapping decent shots of the moon, but the stars seem to be a bit more difficult. I did manage to grab this weak picture of mars when it was so prevalent in 2003:

Yeah, thats a nice shot of the Pleiades. I have considered getting a telescope w/ a tracking tripod in the past. But I'm happy just to shoot pics with my camera. I enjoy doing nighttime time exsposure stuff. I've done exposures as long as 2 hours in the past creating some great effects with star trails.
And nice pic of Mars there Adrug, considering the equipment you are using!

It's sad thing indeed, to not be able to see the endangered, majestic starry-night sky, which has been a source of awe, inspiration and wonder for centuries upon centuries. Nowadays, one must visit Greenland or Africa just to see the Milky Way Galaxy that we live in.
