Anybody have an idea for a good MP3 player?
    #3559923 - 12/30/04 01:55 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I don't need a super top of the line one, but I do want a decent one. I also don't want one of those ones that die on you because the battery is not replaceable. I could make due with a ten hour music capability I think.

I have an Ipod Mini but I never use it. It doesn't support half of my music, the iTunes program for the PC is shit, and like you said they have battery problems. Instead I use a Hewlett Packard PocketPC with a 1gb Sandisk memory card for my music. The battery life is good but I carry around an extra battery just in case (haven't needed it yet).

I also really like the Sony MP3 walkmen, take a look at some of the cheaper ones on this page: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHO...ork&Dept=pa

There are a lot of options out there, but be sure to go with a name brand.

I have a recommendation motherfucker.

I introduce to you the iRiver H-320/40:

- comes in 20 or 40gb size
- average battery life = 16 hours on 3 hours charge
- user-replaceable battery ($30)
- battery life should be 18-24 months
- plays .ogg
- built in fm radio
- can record fm radio
- can be used as a voice recorder
- can record with Line-In (hook it up to your stereo, mixing board, whatever)
- with buit-in microphone, great for recording lectures, etc.
- with external microphone, great for recording live shows
- can play Line-Out
- drag & drop capability (meaning, drivers & weirdo company software are unnecessary to use - just drag music onto it like it were floppy disk)
- works out of the box with winamp
- text reader for digital books
- full color screen - great resolution
- GUI is skinnable: http://www.misticriver.net/photos/thumbnails.php?album=125
- audio so much better than the ipod
- can be used as an external harddrive (well, it is one) - can hold whatever file you want to carry/transport
- picture viewer (much better resolution than the ipod photo). you can connect your digital camera and dump photos onto it (if you run out of memory on your cam).
- can play movies/.avi (if you flash to the korean firmware - works wonderfully without any trouble) - meaning, you can watch dvds in your hand.
- does not have any DRM restrictions meaning you can transfer actual music files from one computer to another via the player - the ipod will not allow you to do this - only play the songs (if iTunes is installed on your friends computer, of course).
- ~$50 less than an equivalent ipod.

I highly recommend this player.
here is a great resource/forum: http://www.misticriver.net

enjoy

Nice, my PPC does all of that and I paid $225 . A 20gb drive would be good though. Anyways.. Randall, what price range are you shooting for and how much music would you ideally like it to carry?

No more than 250$. It doesn't have to be super super advanced either. I would have no use for using it as a hard drive or storing pictures or shit like that. I have a computer...I am able to use it for all of my media and data storage needs. I just need a cool walkman that holds a decent amount of music, is easy to use, and sounds good.

Creative Labs- go for the Zen Xtra. It's fairly light/small (a tad bigger than the iPod), backlit, supports just about all audio (including Audible format, finally), and you can get the 30gb for under $250. Plus, you can upgrade the HD if you so desire. www.creativelabs.com

Creative Labs- go for the Zen Xtra.

Does it sound good? Sound quality is way more important than a bunch of bells and whistles. Also, a lot of digital players seem to be "mini-disc" players. I don't want one of those...I want a hard drive based walkman.

Sound quality was my #1 priority- that's why I went with the Zen over the Ipod.  Not only does the Zen support higher bitrate-encoded files than the Ipod can, Creative Labs is known for its line of sound cards and sound systems.  I wouldn't use anything else.  Plus, it is a hard-drive player, not a disc player.  And the HD is easily upgradable, not that they'd advertize that..  :smirk:

Jesus Christ....There are a lot of MP3 players out there...

Ok...I'll list some of the characteristics that I want:

1. Durability-It needs to be of a very good quality. It needs to be able to be dropped and beat and still work. I want it to not break down. It should work for years without a hiccup.
2. Sound Quality-It needs to sound very good.
3. Simplicity-I don't want a bunch of extra shit on my player. I want it to be easy to use. I want to be able to move MP3's to and from it easily. I want to be able to select and play songs easily.
4. Hard drive size-I want it to be able to hold a decent amount of songs. It should be able to hold at least 20 hours of music.
5. Size-I don't want it to be big and bulky.

I've been reading reviews on Amazon.com and it seems as if all of the MP3 players that have normal hard drives and batteries have at least a significant minority of people complaining about shit. Everything from bad headphone jacks, complete appliance death after a few months, and freezing up is detailed in the reviews. Are all MP3 players really this unreliable and shitty?

The 20gig iPod is the best choice for you. I have a 40gig and it's incredible. The controls are worth the money alone. Trust me, after using the click wheel, going back to using clumsy buttons and dials is unbearable.

The battery on the iPod (4th gen) lasts an average of 12 hours of continuos playback time. (no other music player gets close). Mine lasts even more than the 12 hours frequently.

I've had my 4th gen iPod since it launched several months ago and haven't had a single problem. And if you do get a faulty unit, Apple's service is badass. My friend sent his faulty Mini back in and they sent him a brand new one, as well as 3 accessories (iTrip, in-ear headphones, and a remote).

I'd go with the iPod dude.

the ipod might be what he's looking for, but me personally I wouldnt want one for many reasons...

1. short battery lifespan (most likely intentional/by design)
2. high cost of battery replacement
3. does not support .ogg
4. DRM/copyright restrictions - you cannot transfer files
5. iTunes blows
6. poor decoding - compared to other players, the ipod doesnt sound great
7. lacking many features that other quality players have built-in (ability to record, color screens, line in/out, ability to hold any file type as a harddisk has the ability to).
8. does not have the ability to work on someone else's computer without itunes being installed first.

I think choosing a player is choice between form and function. the ipod is all form. I want function.

That is not true at all. my iRiver gets about 16 hours. the jetaudio iaudio m3 gets 14. the rio carbon will get about 20 hours.

ipod batteries are the worst on all fronts - charge length, battery life, battery lifespan, and cost of replacement.

...I've been reading reviews on MP3 players for two damn hours. What I see is scary. On practically every player, there will be four great reviews and then one horrible review. I see people saying shit like, "The hard drive failed and the manufacturer won't replace it" and stuff like that. I looked through all of the mainstream manufacturers and all of their models, and I have yet to see a player that got over 4 out of 5 stars. It's weird...according to the reviews the following stuff seems to be true a lot:

Ipods:
-pros:
They are easy to use.
-cons:
The battery dies easily and you need to send it away to get replaced.
The sound isn't very good.
They scratch easily.
They are overpriced.

Creative:
-pros:
They sound great.
-cons:
Every model has something that is cheesy on it, whether it is the headphone jack or the hard drive that is prone to failing.
The warranty is very short and cheesy.

and on and on....

God...why can't there just be a perfect MP3 player on the market...?

I was recently looking for a good pair of earbuds. I was reading reviews over at amazon.com and came across a negative rating. the guy said the earbuds were defective and he had to return them - he said the chord for the right ear was much longer than the left ear. "defective, waste of money, do not buy!!!" kinda review. what the guy didnt realize was the chords are supposed to be this length so that you can wear the chord from behind your head to avoid the chord being in the way. this design is an excellent one once you get used to it.
