But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.

I am an American and I am willingly giving to the Red Cross. There is no need for the government to come in and take my money by force.

"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."

"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."

JESUS CHRIST!!!! If they want to give more they will do it of their own accord......there is no need to take their money by force. If the American and European populations are so generous, then why is he complaining? According to his assertion they will already be giving heavily to charities that will be helping with the Asian catastrophe, so there is no need for the government to step in.

But seriously, I should not get worked up and give a shit about what someone from an organization full of thieves and bureaucrats says.

Raise Taxes????

We are taxed enough and our government has plenty of money to give away..

We just chose to spend it on bombs and pipelines.

Its a good thing that this person doesn't speak for those in need. If he did, I would advise reducing all aid to zero. Fuck those who aren't greatful.

Raising taxes to fund foreign aid is rediculous. I would like to see a larger percentage of current tax dollars spent on aid rather than war. But I would of course rather have taxes drastically reduced at the federal level.

Hmmm do we really believe that the genorosity of individuals in the US would equal what the government give now, if taxes were removed? interesting arguement.

It all boils down to a fundamental difference of opinion on economic matters. Europeans think the government should be the "catalyst" in doing good, and in order to do that "good", productive taxpayers have a large amount of their income taken from them in the form of taxes.

Americans are giving money to the Red Cross and other organizations without any government prompting. I am about to try to get on the donation website again to give some cash(the first time I tried it there was massive lag because of so many people trying to donate).

Im sure that the generosity of our people will be MUCH more than what our government has pledged...

Only time will tell if they give more and just how much support they add but already thousands of Americans have gone to the devastated areas and Millions have been donated in money and tens of more millions have been donated in aid (water, toiletries, medicine, ect.).

Its sad that the US Government says that it wants to be the world leader but when it comes to world crises we pledge up front what it costs us to wage just 1.5 hours war time in an oil rich country.

Anyone who suggests that the US should raise taxes so we can give more money to other countries really makes me want a half hour alone with them in a room with a pair of pliers.

Seriously.

I'm definately not opposed to foreign aid, but there comes a point where it would do more harm than good. Like keeping a grandparent in pain on life support simply because you can't let them go.
Wow, now it's time to call me callous I guess.. oh well.
Anyway.. government-supplied foreign aid.. how much good is it even doing. Have conditions improved, can we send less money now? Of course not -- we always must send MORE money. So.. conditions never improve, irregardless of how much we send? Why send, then?

If you would like to make a point, staying away from irrelevancies would help.

A fair indication of a country's "stinginess" would measure per capita giving by the citizens of that country. This would include what people give without coercive government policies forcing them. By this measure, the U.S. is one of the least stingiest countries in the world. For instance, this article claims that the U.S. gives four times more per capita than the U.K. We can point to the added bonus that private charities tend to focus on directly helping the people while a lot of government aid tends to go to the established government run bureaucracies and is disbursed with higher overhead while allowing the leaders to appear generous and relieving them of political pressure to make meaningful changes in the way they operate.

But lets not let the facts get in the way of America bashing...

Hahaha! Did anybody see the latest footage of that UN official(Jan England I believe his name is) who said that the U.S. was "stingy"? He was backtracking like a little bitch saying that he was "misquoted". He squirmed like a fucking pussy in front of that camera as he tried to make amends. Socialist asshole.

Jan Egeland, a Norwegian who holds the lofty title of Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, now claims he was ?misinterpreted? when he charged Monday that ?there are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy.

It's funny how one side(the UN) thinks we're "stingy" for not giving enough foreign aid while another side(the terrorists) want to kill us for giving foreign aid to their governments.  Guess you can't please everyone.

its thoughts like this that sicken me about the conservative viewpoint, the idea that you would feel the desire to inflict bodily pain upon someone over losing a small bit of fucking money. its just money. and taxes are intended to chiefly be upon non-sustenance money.

there should be no tax-funded relief payments. if people want to voluntarily give, let them. any amount provided involuntarily does not convey generosity, or compassion, or anything of the sort.

the US government gives aid because it makes them look good. this is a public relations gig to make people in other countries have a more favorable view of the united states government, and we are forced to foot the bill. it ain't right.

It's not about the money.
It's about the whole idea behind everything.

The government does not know best. I'm really not a fan of socialism.

As has been noted, by and by large Americans give a hell of a lot, and a great deal voluntarily. Funny but this actually ties in with a random factoid I posted a lil while back.

Here in Pennsylvania we have an 18% tax on all liquor (by the bottle). It's the Johnstown flood relief fund -- I believe it was 1936.
Obviously they no longer recieve the money. It was put on the books with the intentions of removing it after $50 million had been raised, and in fact.. it was initially only 10%. Over the years, they decided to keep the tax, raise it to 18%, and the money now goes into the general state coffers.

So.. why should we give the government more money, again?

It's not just my money, it's everyone's money. What sickens me about the liberal viewpoint is they equate compassion with spending money forcefully taken from other people.
