Anyone know what caused this "hairlip"?

Is it a genetic mutation or was it cause by AFOAF somehow?

thanks,....that's what I thought..

Some funguys from the same batch have these little cathedral type spears protruding from the caps, is this also a genetic mutation?

Steeples? That's one I haven't seen, but yes, that's likely a genetic mutation as well.

Genetics orrrrr it could be rosecomb. I think thats some evil bacterial contam. I can say that I have seen a few that look like that in my time.

i too have seen this many times... definitely bacterial or genetic... some caps even get "splotches" which many say is acterial... just a question for ppl in the know.. are these safe to consume?

i see steeples all the time on liberty caps. now theres a species that is prone towards mutation! each cluster of caps lke a snowflake. incurved margins, wavy margins, steeples, no steeples, concave cap, convex cap, all colors of the rainbow. such a varried morphology. its neat finding a new type :)

madness never slows down, it only piles up.

I have a couple shrooms off my cake that have a diamond like shape, sounds like it may be similiar to the posts above but their pitures won't show, Does anyone know how I could see them.

If not let me describe it better the diamond shape isn't a lump but rather it would appear as a diamond section was cut away and a new diamond shape head has grown into replace the missing section. More that I look at it, it looks like an upside down raindrop with curvature to match the cap. Other shrooms on the cake look fine, justt a couple look this way.

The strain is EQ, they were awfully slow to grow, and even slower to fruit.
Mutation? Contamination?
