Shrooms N00bs Need help with identifications...
    #3483620 - 12/11/04 08:43 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Hey as some of you know we've been interested in pursuing getting shrooms for the past few weeks and just today we think we may have hit what we've been looking for. The only problem is that we're not very confident in our ability to identify and we all want to be safe rather than sorry.

We think these are liberty caps...

And we think these are Psilocybe azurescens but there's a couple of different species in there apparently.

Also if someone could give me the most basic explanations of how to do spore prints and how to test for poison in these mushrooms I'd be most grateful. I read all the information provided on this site but still have difficultly understanding it. Like I can't seem to get anything when I spore print and I want a sure fire way to make sure whatever we're taking is safe.

Thanks

I live in Seattle, Sorry I had to take the pics with my camera phone since I don't have my digicam right now... I'll take better pics if you need me too.

The "Liberty" caps are yellowish in color.

No azures there, I'd like to see more of the possible libs. Maybe you can get pictures that are good enough for a positive ID by putting them under a better light.

Libs and Azures don't grow in the city of Seattle. Libs grow in cow pastures, and azures grow along the Southern Coast of Washington State. However, you can find Cyanescens and Stunzii within Seattle. What were these mushrooms growing out of: Grass, manure, or mulch?

Yes I can wrap the stem of the "Libs" around my finger and we picked them in a spot we were told they are known to be in. I'm fairly convinced that these are what we are looking for, I'm just wondering what these other two shrooms are.

To make a spore print, cut the stem off from a cap and lay it, gill side down, on a piece of white paper. Wait several hours - overnight works well. If your area is dry, put a cup or bowl over the specimen, or put the paper and specimen in a gallon Ziploc bag to keep the humidity high. What we need to know is the color of the spore deposit on the paper. White spores are easily visible by looking at the paper at a steep angle.

There is no way to easily test for any but a couple specific toxins in mushrooms. The easiest way to find if a mushroom is safe or poisonous is to identify it to species. Spore print color is one of the first and most important things to know to do that.

Try describing the things asked for in the sticky thread at the top of the forum. Are the gills attached or free? Do they have a distinctive odor? Are any parts slimy or sticky?

The second specimen suggests a Pholiota to me at first glance. A spore print and description of what it was growing from will help confirm that.

Happy mushrooming!

By the way thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciated it. I know how annoying it must be to try to deal with some people who have no idea what this new thing is and try to teach adults to read all over again but we really do appreciate it.

Edit: Oh snap, hang on dude let me read the sticky and get back to you with all the info I can provide... my bad, I totally spaced on reading the sticky.

Hang on give me a minute...

I'm so sorry I blew part 2... my bad... okay I'll provide what I can.
(By the way I keep putting Liberty Caps in quotations because it's just easier to call whatever these are by that name)

I'll re-add pics in a second.

"The Liberty Caps"

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)

Kent, WA near a area where we were told active mushrooms were growing. Found them in patches of grass

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)

I am unfamiliar with how to tell gills but we already dried these mushrooms and it's too difficult to look up inside them.

c. Measurements of cap and stem.

Caps range in size from about the length across my pinkie to the full size of the length across my pinkie

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

Dried the stems seem to be hollow yellowish brownish and about 3/4s of a inch to a inch depending on the size of the mushroom. They're very thin and can be wrapped around my pinkie.

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)

Dried the caps are light yellowish brownish and are brittle and crunchy like pop corn. Spherical in shape. I don't know what Convex/Concave mean *embarassed*

f. Spore print color (very important!)

I'm not sure

g. Color that the mushroom bruises

They're dried... so I don't know.

Mystery Mushroom #1

a. Habitat (where [state/province/country] and what does it grow on)

Seattle, WA in a park underneath some trees in some mulch.

b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)

Dried there are straight lines coming down from inside the cap with a caucasian fleshy like color.

c. Measurements of cap and stem.

Cap is a large bell like shape as long as the first knuckle of my pinkie. Stem is about inch and a half long.

d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)

Stem is a whitish brownish color, it seems to be hollow near the top and solid at the bottom and is fairly thick.

e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)

Cap is whitish brown.

f. Spore print color (very important!)

I'm not sure

g. Color that the mushroom bruises

They're dried... so I don't know.

I've seen your mystery mushrooms on my hunts around Seattle. Don't know scientific names but none are active or choice edible.

That may in fact be a lib. I would go back to where you found it, get some fresh ones, then take a spore print and find out where whether or not the gills are attached. That may be a lot of work but I don't think anyone on this site can tell positively from those cell phone pictures.

Edit: though i've never actually seen a lib and will most likely be embarrassed when the real experts chime in..

Good luck.

Those dont look ANYTHING like Liberty Caps. They look more like Coprinus.

Those dont look ANYTHING like P. azure's either.... lol

Best bet would be to throw those mushrooms away.

None are active, none edible. I cannot make any ID's from what I see there.

Liberty caps grow in cow pastures...
