hey all. I was listening to some audio lectures by alan watts. I was wondering if there is a text form of these lectures available on a website? thanks for the help.

I like watts and enjoy listening too him, but do get the feeling that even he is not "all there". Allthough I doubt anyone ever trully "gets it", he comes close to attaining this by way of intellectual/philisophical reasoning. He shows an understanding of spirituality in the mental sense, but may have missed aspects of the physical and emotional realms.

nice points here. I am new to alan watts. after listening to his audio samples, I got interested in him and his work. I picked up a couple of books from my library, but did not have the chance to start yet.

after his audio lectures, i also became interested in zen budhism. I really like the way he explains.

when reading swamis posts, you must apply the signature to his comments.

but I would also like him to explain this better, documenting his sources, or appreciate if anyone else has any feedback on this

Well, the book has been returned to the library and everything, but since this thread is encompassing Alan Watts, I'm sure we could just discuss some of the ideas in here. :wink:

What do you think of the passages where he discusses the universe as mutually arising events? I think this paints a pretty accurate, profound portrait of the universe, ur own lives, and how dynamic the chain of cause and effect is.

Mutually arising basically means that every variable in the universe is dependant on every other variable, not only to be defined by relation to these other variables, but also to exist in the first place. With each moment that passes, these variables interact with the other variables, changing every single one. In this manner the universe "unfolds", like water flowing as a stream. The interaction between the water and the environment that it is flowing in changes the course of the water and the enivronment that it flows in. Every single aspect of the universe is acting in this manner with every other variable through association and interaction.

That actually sounds like something that I have been reading on space.com. It is a series of articles on quantum mechanics/theory. In it, it talks about how a quantum particle does not actually "exist" until it is observed. Particles are also said to be "waves of probability". Thus the observer, and the observation are one and the same. Sounds quite mystical doesn't it? But it actually comes from a purely scientific source. Looks like science and religion are tackling the same reality from opposite ends.

hes just stating that there is no difference from observer/observed. which is prevalant in much ancient philosophy .to be the observed there needs to be an observer to take notice of it . to be an observer there needs to be something to be observed. hence subjective and objective are 2 sides of the same coin. he talks much about this concept in the audio lecture entitled "myth of myself" .i believe watts is a very wonderful speaker.. and to say that anyone has it "all figured out" is blasphemy. and i dont believe he was abusive to his wife. i have tons of his audio lectures(about 1000 mb) but no server.. so if anyone does or is interested in obtaining these through a file sharing program or something drop me a p.m

Watts is a legend. Helped me make sense of eastern philosophy. I have over thirty of his lectures and it gets repetitive after a while. There were quite a few lectures where he was talking about no difference between the observer and the observed. His overall message was 'you' are IT.

He hadn't worked it all out and admitted it. I read somewhere when responding to someone that he wrote down the titles of all his books with arrows pointing towards an empty circle. When asked what was in the circle he replied he hadn't the faintest idea. I'd be very wary of anyone who claims he's totally worked it out.
