What ratio should I use to keep it aerated enough to colonize fast?

i'd say at least half. i used too little verm (i couldn't find straw) so my poopy is taking forever to colonize. next time i'm damn sure making a better effort to score some straw.

I go with about 25% by dry volume. But then again, I use straw as well. Honestly, I wouldn't go with a 50/50 manure/vermiculite as that would diminish yeilds IMO, and be a waste of vermiculite. I have used strait manure with a few casings and they turned out wonderful. No slow colonization that I can remember, but I believe vermiculite in the mix will help yields to an extent (moisture).


Just make sure the moisture content is correct with proper air exchange and you shouldn't have any colonization problems with 25% vermiculite...

It's not straight clumpy poo though either, it's composted humus and manure and it looks like it might breathe all right. I'm also using a liquid culture to spawn to it, and I'm doing them all in oven bags so that I can get a bunch of spawn points. I'm thinking that 25% would be good, any other thoughts? Any other substances that are good for aeration and maybe even carry a few nutes?

verm mixed into straw? why? there is really no need to
the straw will handle it even when packed tight
spawn at a ratio of 1:5 it will colonize in a week

hay will work can you not find any hay?
shredded corogated cardboad will work also

No no, verm mixed into poo in place of the straw. I don't feel like messing with straw or finding it, so I needed a substitute for the aeration qualities, and consequently the speedly colonization qualities that straw provides, and it seems that I found it. Thanks guys.

how about a bunch of cut up plastic drinking straws? i have no idea about this at all, just a suggestion for airating purposes...you'd just throw em in the poo stink pile after pasturizing it. don't pasturize the straws that is...maybe it would work.

awww cause verm holds water better than anything else, mushrooms are 90% water and get most of their water from the substrate

I would use 1/2 verm(even if you had straw I'd recommend half verm)
