Im ADD?is Adderol/Ritalin the answer?

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was in 6?th grade. I was prescribed Ritalin which raised my grades from a B to an A and made me a class pet but didn?t particularly like the way it made me feel, so I stopped taking it and became the regular class clown B grade student. Even though it was a disadvantage to have such a short attention span, I still managed to do fine without it. Well, its been 8 years and Im in college now and my psychologist again diagnosed me with ADD but I am still hesitant about going on the med. Despite the fact that I experiment with recreational drugs occasionally, I don?t like the idea that I would have to take a drug everyday?.and I don?t want to become dependent like those stories I hear: ?I cant do anything productive-wake up unless I take my adderol? So basically, I can coexist without it but I know it will help me with finishing up the tons of projects I?m half way through, get my grades up and just get my shit in order. I just don?t know if the benefits are worth the consequences. Any advice?

fuck ritalin and adderol, i would never put my kids on that for any reason. they label a child a "problem" at the first sign of any resistance to the brainwashing that takes place throughout childhood. just because you don't excel in the educational system doesn't mean you should have to take a pill to dull your imagination and energy. i envy the class clowns and the kids that keep getting sent to the principal's office. they are still free.

Finally someone who accepts me for who I am
I went to the office every day in 5th grade.. Pretty much every day in 6th grade too, and a lot of 7th.. I had 11 saturday detentions in 7th grade. (that's 44 hours of detention just on saturdays..) Wow I miss school more and more every day. You think school sucks all the way up until you're done with it, then you get a full time job and realize how good you had it when you were in school.

I never realized it was an "imagination duller" and dont get me wrong, I can function fine without it. I am just tired of casncelling my lost Visa every month and tearing apart my room every week looking for my Keys and then arive late to work where I have a dozen half finished tasks done because I keep getting bored of one and move on to the next. The structure of school kind of helped me stay on track but now that I am on my own, my mind is all over the place. I mean, I have so many songs that I have composed half way before I move on to the next. People tell me these meds will help....

Amphetamines actually give me more imagination. But as an alternative to everything suggested I've heard Wellbutrin can also help with ADD.

Well I'm out of school and I still think it sucks
At least I get paid for the time I'm at work...

I would also be uncomfortable taking pills every day. I also start tasks, don't finish them and move onto a different tasks (i also start reading books, then buy new ones all the time, so i have many books that are half read). I wouldn't consider myself ADD, maybe a psych would, but they're nuts. Do what you think will turn out the best for you.

Psilly, I just wanted to add, that everyone I know that has ADD (I know 4 people) and is on adderall, just gives it away. None of them take it at all because they say it clouds their thoughts and makes them feel different than they really are.
I myself don't have ADD and take adderall when I'm trying to write new songs, or anything I want to concentrate on for a long time (as it's a speed).

I'm in the same spot as you and I just got a prescription for Strattera last month. I guess it's always kinda hard to tell the immediate effects of drugs like this. But my ability to stay focused while I'm working (both my area of study and the job that goes along with it our extremely boring) seems to have improved slightly. The best thing is that when I read, I'm somehow able to retain information much better now.
I haven't noticed any change in mood. And I don't feel any sort of dependence on it. I just take it when I need to... The only side effect I've noticed is that I can get a little sleepy a few hours after taking it. But that wears off pretty quick.
I think the best thing you can do is at least try some meds out.
