Pics of some Mushrooms in my neighborhood
    #3320992 - 11/04/04 05:38 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I was on my way home from work when I passed this one house and noticed many clusters of mushrooms. I went and got my camera and asked the people that lived there if I could snap a few photographs on their property. They we're very nice and told me to come back anytime I wanted. I thought the colours and the groups we're very pretty, and for my area you don't see much of this. The temps have been 40-45F at night time, and rise up to 65-69 during the day. Its been two days of non-stop raining here so there should be a lot more to come.

(Pic 1)These ones we're packed tight, light grey colour, stripe was from 2-5 inches, stipe was solid. Gils we're not attached and had a dark purple tint. Cap was large, conical, half the size of the stem, and was 1-3 inches wide. Very agressive fruiting - smelled like plain ol' mushrooms.

(Pic 2)These guys we're a few feet over from the grey ones. These guys we're all bigger, and had a very deep purple tint to them. Almost the same attributes at the grey ones execpt they we're almost 2x the size. Cap was conical. The gills we're Black and they seemed to melt into black goo when I looked into the core of the patch. But, one thing about these is they SMELLED LIKE DEATH. I took a whiff and I was gagging. The lady said that a dead rat had decomposed in the spot those mushrooms came up in, I dunno if that had anything to do with them, but could they have been decomposeing a dead rat?

(Pic 3)These guys we're popping up not in clusters, but solo every 20-30 feet or so. These grew to 2x the hight of the grass and had almost every colour in the rainbow on them. The stripe was bright white, but paper thin and hollow. The Gills seemed to be attacked and there was a purple at the base of the stripe. These ones we're almost half a foot off the ground, thats what caught my eye. The gills we're bright pink, and faded to the color of the cap as it got closer to the stripe.

(Pic 4 & 5)These little guys remind me of supermarket button mushrooms. Very thick, gowing to the high of the grass. The stripe and cap seemed to almost be one unit, it seemed very compact. Stripe was 3-4 inches on each one and the cap went from Golfball size to Cueball size. These guys smell good actually, fresh strong mushroom smell. If I threw one of these at someone I bet I could hurt them. These seemed to be growingin clusters of 5-15 in "fairy ring" pattern on the lawn in the shade of the trees. Every other lawn in my neighborhood has a good handful of these growing on it. These guys we're pure white, but had little bit of tanning on the cap.

(Pic 6)And the last guy I saw on my ride home was this thing. It must have weighed 20LBS. It seemed to be growing out of this rotten fence. It was very bringt orange, and went I got closer I noticed blues, reds, purples all through out the flesh. On the underside of the flesh it is a bright green colour, and the flesh was very tough. There was no stripe or gills that I could find. Didn't poke around to long at this because he was in the neighbors yard and no one was home to ask for permission, so just leaned over the fence and snapped this one.

Hrm ... I am pretty sure they are not amantias. The colours off, size and the stem isn't fat enough. The cap it totally wrong. The black goo is a good sign they are not amantias.

Sounds about right IES... I didn't know you were the mushroom hunting type. I'll be damned.

Anyways, that shelf looking mushroom looks very similar to Laetiporus sulfureus.

The 3rd pic down is definately a Coprinus Comatus (shaggy mane). They're edible, but I dont really like them too much. The smell is probably all from the rat, because in my experience they just smell like mushrooms.
