Any Hippies Out There Use Patchouli instead of Deoderant?
    #3315752 - 11/03/04 03:54 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

and why?

there were a couple granolas last week staying at my house for 2 days and they both used this fragrance?

I thought it smelled kinda bad mixed with human sweat and BO.

Hahaha I find it amusing when people are so accustomed to artificial spray-on chemical fragrances and sweat blockers that they find the natural scent of a human being to be strongly unpleasant.

I can understand offence if someone really really reeks as in they haven't washed / changed their clothes for many days or they have some shit stuck to their shoes or something, but generally for an otherwise clean person I can't say I find 'BO' all that bad.

As for the patchouli, I can't remember what that specific scent smells like, but yes 'hippies' do often like to use different oils etc. as perfume. Personally I like to get a big fresh sticky bud and rub it all over my body before a hard day at the office.

I don't like the smell of it myself. But I don't mind it much at all either.

I let this "hippie" at my work borrow my copy of "Waking Life" and she spilled it all over it. My DVD smells like it now.

I like it and have worn it but not as a fucking deodorant alternative.

I don't really wear deodorant all that often anyways, just in certain social situations.

the healthiest deodorant is just being clean.  chemicals can be saved for getting laid and finding jobs

I like the smell of my BODY ODOR and i try not to wear deodarent, but i do if i'm going say on a date or to work. And i definitely don't cover it up with patchouli, yick. Althought i do have a patchouli plant and its quite nice.

nice! im just one of those really sweaty people (especially in the armpit and foot catagory) i hate the smell of my own human funk so im not trying to be hypocrital here...

it was just an odd mixture, almost a texture  :smirk:, of smells...

it still lingers, altho theyve been gone for about 5 days!
i shouldnt have let them sleep on the sofas.

the reason i ask is that i've heard that some hippies refuse to wear store bought deoderant because the aluminum in the product makes the indivual wearing it trackable by the government...

and i worked with one of these guys as a bartender, he REEKED b/c he refused to wear deodarant for this reason.

I haven't worn deodorant for years and years.
I don't think I smell that strongly or badly, and haven't had bad reactions from people with whom I've worked in close quarters.
It may have hurt me on a few occassions - I don't really know.

I think that strongly-scented deodorants and cleaning products stink.

I agree, the over application of perfumed deodorant makes for a pretty unpleasant / nauseating scent.
Personally, I shower every morning using soap, but pretty much never use deodorant.
A couple of years ago I was taking BIOL111 the biology of cells at uni. We had to make up a lab experiment with our lab partner. My lab partner was a jock who used anti-bacterial soap and large amounts of antipersperant deodorant daily. We got a petri dish that was divided into thirds, and both of us swabbed our armpits with a Q-tip. He smeared his on one section, mine on another, and the 3rd was the control. Sure enough, a week later we check on it, his section and the control were both totally free of any kind of growth, while my section displayed a pretty little zig-zag of bacterial colonies. Just as my lab partner was in the middle of giving me a hard time and calling me a dirty hippie, the lab demonstrator came past to check up on us. He went on to explain that in the long run I was actually in a better position because I was colonised with friendly bacterias which don't smell so bad. Whereas if this jock dude had to go a day or two without his precious chemicals, he would be very vunerable to attack from the bad microbes that smell really bad. Its a similar story when it comes to washing hair apparently. For the healthiest hair you've got to either only use water and no products, or go all out and use expensive shit that like replaces natural oils etc. with shiny synthetic versions. I just use water. I'm not gonna buy into commercials trying to convince me that I 'need' their product to be 'normal', what a freakin crock! :P

i haven't worn deoderant in years. i shower every couple of days or so and i don't smell bad. as in that rank B.O. it has a LOT to do with diet. i haven't eaten meat in ages. the chemicals or whatnot in meat produce those foul smells. especially in the number in which most people eat meat products today. i find it funny that people are always so shocked if they find out i don't wear deorderant. and think i am strange for not covering my self with artifical products and chemicals i cant name.

and Jenny, i too love the smell of the human body. it makes me sick to smell some guy or gal with a couple ounces of CK1 on. its so fake and chemically.

I wear the arm & hammer unscented deoderant. It doesn't smell like chemicals, but it doesn't smell like BO either.

that daily planet show explaiend what BO is. it is little micor animals dudes that munch on sweat/skin and such and it is tehir feces that cause teh stink. where antipersperant comes in is it blocks teh pores (aluminum) adn prevents sweat keeping the little buggers away. and it perfumes.

also cornking. well im sure tehre are conspircaies about aluminum and government teh main concern for the sane is that aluminum is strongly linked to alzheimers (sp?). and some other not so nice things affecting the brain. thats teh reason i DONT use antipersperant, but i do use deoderant (jsut teh smelly stuff that doesnt block the ppores).

sometime when i feel liek having all the gals i see on a day to day basis rip off their clothes and force me into a bedroom ill try that axe shit out. i sure hope it delivers what it promises. or maybe its teh alzheimery delusions that they are speaking of ?

for me the scenting and becoming sick is with alcohol based perfumes. thats what really makes me feel grose...nto the best thing to have on a date.

Body odor is one thing. But when people sweat up a storm in the morning, at night they're not smelling too dandy.

That doesn't go so well with me. Things aren't so great when someone smells badly. It actually induces really sharp migranes so I've chosen to stick with my antiperspirants. Not so good and you usually end up sweating in other places, but oh well. Old spice smells good. I'd use it even if it gave me cancer.

No, Its no joke, you just put that shit on and the women come running out of their houses like the zombies in Dawn Of The Dead. Make sure no cars are coming, cause the chicks across the street will run right out in front of cars and stuff. Be careful, that stuff is not a toy.
