I live in the middle of the freak'n capatial( well, inside the belt-way). There are no stores in my area that sell 1/2 pint jars-- trust me, ive been looking for about a mounth.Then, on this magical day, the super-market down the street from me put a new item on the shelf...... "Graves' Mountain Green Pepper Jelly." Now, just stop and think about that. Pepper -- jelly. yup, thats right, the green things you put on your tacos, and the sweet stuff you put on your bread. it is the nastyest tasteing stuff ive ever eaten. BUT, it is a 9 oz. jar, so it all works out. just thought i share.

oh yeah, i was wondering how much the cake shrinks befor you birth it? thanks

From experience a fully colonized half pint jar will shrink a quarter inch or more away from the glass.....

I also live in the Capital, and I looked for a while before I found any canning jars. Anyway, if you don't feel like buying a dozen jars of pepper jelly (sounds like nasty stuff) you can get the canning jars at Shoppers Warehouse or Wal-Mart (I go to the one in Bowie, MD, on US 301; I don't know if the others have them.) Hope that helps-

Voxted, I feel bad that y'all up there in the capital must pay a few bucks a piece just to get a jar. Then you gotta dispose of that pepper jelly. Unless of course you live down here with dmb420 and I. Someone would take it off your hands fer sher. It's politics man I tell, ya! They know we use for fun. It's a conspiracy man! BTW are those jars tapered? I used baby food jars my very first attempt. Since I don't get down with the PF tek. It doesn't really matter if they they stay whole or if they get dug out. You dig? If you are going to make a casing, just let 'em colonize and gently dig them out in a few pieces. 4oz. baby food jars colonize like the wind! I am now using 4oz tapered widemouths by Kerr. They fit the same lids as all the other jarz. They are just 4oz instead of 8. Mycelium run through them with a vengence. You know with all the redneck mamas down here, there are jelly jars in all sizes. In fact, I bet there has been some pepper jelly made in a few of them. I put 1 ml. of juice in them. There are 4 holes in the lid. three spread evenly around the edges and 1 in the middle. I shoot 'em with 1/4 ml per hole. Cams in these jars 'sprouted' after three days and completely ran throught the jar in another 5. PESAs 'sprouted after 5 days and ran through the jars in another 6. Pretty fast!
