    #3195108 - 09/29/04 12:34 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

can anyone give me some tips on identifying Psilocybe Azurescens? i think i may have found some growing right outside of my dorm in a flower garden with woodchips. it just started going to about 50?f at night and a high of 70 at most for the past week. i just saw them poop up today after some torrentiial downpours last night. i will post some pics as soon as i get a chance, i was about to buy a disposible digital camera, i dont even know how that works it doesnt seem cost effecient to me. thanks for your help.

P azurescens are indigenous to the Astoria Hammmond, Oregon Coastal region with a few in the PNW. But over the years, even transplanted patches in other states dfail to reproduce after a year or so. We all can be in doubt that you found azurescens on the east coast.

i will definetly take that into consideration and be very cautious trying to identify them. no pics yet but i snagged one from outside and took some measurments. these are pretty small cause it only stopped raining this morning. the stem is abot 3cm long and is mostly white yet fading into a darker tannish/brown towards he ground. the cap is tan and a little ove 1cm in diameter. there does not appear to be a veil nor ring arround the stem but there is a very obvious white ring along the bottom of the caps. the gills are white in color and i will attemt to take a sporeprint but i think that they are to small/young?

The thing that is most important to consider is that they DON'T GROW IN YOUR AREA.

If they were azurescens you'd know it. They bruise EXTREMELY blue.

White gills dont sound good, they should be more light purple/ darker.
Is there any blueing on the stems from were you picked it? As Azures
will blue rapidly when handled.

Also look at Psilocybe cyanescens as its more likely to fruit in your part of the world. Unless you found some ones elses cultivated patch, its slim chances that it will be Psilocybe azurescens

well they havent bruised blue, the gills are the wrong color, and they dont grow in my area so i guess it is safe to say thye are not Azurescens.

could my description fit Psilocybe cyanescens , they look similar to pictures i have seen yet still they do not bruise blue. do all active species bruise blue? could the gills be the wrong color because they are to young to have made any spores yet?

Cyans dont? or azures dont? Cyans grow in many many locations, as long as the climate zone is correct, I.E further north.

never heard of cyans in the US east of the cascades...

I wont believe they grow there on their own until I see it. if they did, I think it would be documented and/or we'd have reports of it from at least someone on here.

i dont think either would grow on the east coast unless it were cultivated.

It doesn't. Cyans and Azures grow in the PNW in the US. No where else unless someone cultivated them.
