GRATEFUL DEAD - THROWING STONES
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may our home to waste.
There's a fear down here we can't forget hasn't got a name just yet
Always awake, always around singing ashes to ashes all fall down.
Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime calls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes.
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Stalking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat, you and me, you and me.
Click, flashblade in ghetto night. Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley roll them bones. Need that cash to feed that jones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray, selling guns instead of food today.
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
History's page, it is thusly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own.
If the game is lost then we're all the same
No one left to place or take the blame.
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or this shinning ball of bule we can call our home
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians are throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Shipping powders back and forth
Singing "Black goes south while white comes north"
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing "I got mine and you got yours."
And the current fashions set the pace.
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical he rant and rage,
Singing "someone got to turn the page"
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing "Just leave well enough alone"
But his pants are down, his cover's blown
And the politicians are throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause it's all too clear we're on our own
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities.
Ashes, Ashes all fall down.

Is this gonna be one of those threads where everyone recites lyrics? Cuz if it is, I feel left out. (I don't know any)

 I was just giving an example of how the Dead HAVE had some potentially influential political songs.  Don't leave!

Here's some of the most meaningful lyrics I know:

her name is yoshimi
shes a black belt in karate
working for the city
she has to discipline her body
'cause she knows that it's demanding
to defeat those evil machines
i know she can beat them
oh yoshimi
they don't believe me
but you won't let those robots eat me
those evil-natured robots
they're programmed to destroy us
she's gotta be strong to fight them
so she's taking lots of vitamins
'cause she knows that
it'd be tragic
if those evil robots win
i know she can beat them

I don't know what to say Chinacat. I love the Dead and I have a LOT of respect and love for what they did, but I just wish they had mobilized their followers more. So much of what went on at the Dead shows was unspoken.

When important issues and values are unspoken, they can be easily forgotten.

I like what Chinacat had to say about the band respecting the intelligence of the heads and not wanting to tell them what to do.  They didn't/don't want to take the role of "spokespeople", but seemed to be more of an inspiration to their fans in all areas of their lives. Not everyone in a position of power should use it to manipulate the masses- although I would.

They were much too busy getting high on acid to let anything other than music move them.

I know they have some politically minded songs. I just wish that the core values of The Dead (peace and love) weren?t lost on the newer followers.

Just about every single Deadhead that I know are basically ignorant rednecks with Dead shirts on who just want to get fucked up and have no idea why it?s important to love your fellow man.

 OK. I totally hear what you?re saying. Well, I agree with you that some of the newer heads are just there because it?s "cool" and they want to be cool and do drugs and hang with the heads.  Let?s just assume though, that if they actually buy a ticket and go into the show, which, granted- many of them won?t/don?t do- that they will feel the vibe and in turn influence the world in a positive way.  I have seen this happen with my own eyes, even saw it happen last weekend at the festival in SF. We need to have faith in the love being strong enough to spread through us all and not depend on those in "power".

I'm sure it was very different back then, but kids these days don't know what's going on.

Phishgrrl: That's cool. I just get frustrated about the world. I also get worried that what The Dead brought to the world will slowly be forgotten without words to accompany the unspoken love.

Don't worry. Just keep spreading the Love, because it is truly truly growing. The corporate media will not let people know, but it really is. Goooooooooood things are happening, and even better things to come. There is so much fucking love out there. I can't tell you how inspired I am from last weekend.  There are millions of people on the Earth working to make the world an amazing beautiful haven. It's going to happen.
