well considering you go to raves and listen to crappy trance with wifebeaters and glowsticks and fuzzy animal backpacks completely fucked on who knows what, i wouldn't make fun of some hippies that enjoy some relaxing tunes

but that doesn't mean i don't still  you, ss7

Wah? So what, were the Dead into war and violence or what?? Why does it seem as though the Deadheads in this thread are all ashamed of being for peace and love? Why do you all feel that you have to defend yourselves and The Dead? If people don't get it, they don't get. Who cares. If someone called me a hippy dippy flower child, i'd take it as a compliment, because obviously the person who called me that is still living very deeply in the illusion and doesn't understand the importance of living a peaceful life.

Plenty of stuff from the 60's that was dark.
listen to "Death don't have no mercy" and you'll see what I mean.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was watching the "Acid Test" DVD that Kind Kesey made me last night again, and I was thinking about how dark that song is. It's GREAT.

I'm not ashamed of being an advocate for peace and love. The Dead are definitley not pro-war/violence. But they make/made music about LIFE which consists of darkness as well as light. They are not one-sided and fake. I love that about them.

LoL ya!! they actually took the money from their concerts and donated it to the army to buy napalm.

The reference to peace was the bands stance on the protest /peace movement coming out of Berkely. They didn't support it anymore then they supported Vietnam. They were into building and maintaining our own culture.
They saw the best way to help the world was to turn people on and I think they were right.

They should have taken a stance. They should have vocalized their beliefs and intentions. I think that the reason most new Deadheads are directionless druggies who sell hits for $10 each is due to The Dead not vocalizing their philosophy.

Not making fun of 'em.  Just saying it's not my thing.  And I'm sure you noticed at Nocturnal that my backpack was not a fuzzy animal, unless you were on more drugs than I was.

I wish Phish was a little stronger with the lyrics though. Their music is amazing, but the lyrics sometimes don't do it for me. Pink Floyd on the other hand...are both amazing lyrics (thank you roger) and amazing music.

I don't understand how Jerry can just say that The Doors were just another LA band...he must have never read any of Jim's lyrics (their music was good too but the lyrics really stand out).

Does anyone know what the dead though of Pink Floyd or Jimi Hendrix?

Well, who are we to say what they should or should not have done? They did their thing, and have influenced millions of people. Their whole scene was about peace and love and activism. They donate to charities that promote peace. They sang songs about love and peace. They played Morning Dew which is about nuclear war. They were in the middle of the hippy scene, but chose not to bring much political stuff into their image. If they would have done that, then they would not be who they are, so why would anyone want to change that?

On the other hand, I ultra-super admire musicians who DO bring politics into their music and image such as Bob Marley, Ani DiFranco,  and Michael Franti.  I am always really inspired by people like that as are many others. That is their thing, and they do it well!  Here is Michael Franti from this weekend. Shit. I don?t have any more room- otherwise I would put up a pic of Kucinich and Franti! Tomorrow. He is so cool. I got to do yoga with him!

No one asked you to post in this thread Adom. Leave, it costs you nothing.

Phishgrrl: Yeah, I know what you mean, but I think the Dead scene would be better off if they had verbalized their beliefs so that today?s Heads would know what the fuck is going on.

I'd just like to clarify my position: I don't hate the Dead. It's just that they don't do anything for me. I think Adamist said it best: They don't have enough energy. I wouldn't object if I was listening to music with someone and they wanted to put on some Grateful Dead, but I would never voluntarily do so myself. And chinacat, I'll check out those tracks you mentioned, but considering I listen to things like Alice in Chains, NIN, and In Flames, I doubt anything by the Dead could send shivers down my spine.

I don't see how one could think the GD lacked energy unless you hearing some studio recordings or one of the hundreds of lack luster shows. Any 60's or 70's would have plenty.
