Finally found a place near my house that sells Yerba Mate.

$3.09-$4.99 a kilo.....so now I'm setting here with a gourd in my hand, a bombillo in my mouth and a grin on my face. Cheers everyone.

there's this little coffee shop/hippie hangout in town where they sell it here, it's college town though and they have all that kinda stuff. they just sell cups of it though in regular cups. i got a key from a friend i have a gourd and bombilla but whenever i use it i suck up discusting amounts of yerba, the holes in the bbilla are too big i think. anyway it's pretty gross if i use the bbilla unless i wrap a coffee filter around it or something :stoned:

there are proper bombillas for certain kinds of mate and gourds. and many graduations on the filter end.
indeed, it takes a bit for one to find a good bombilla but when one does, it lasts forever...
actually, in order to prepare the gourd, one should spit out the whole first gourdful, it should get you rid of the smallest particles that are annoying.

I tried Mate' for the first time yesterday and I have to say that is some wonderfull stuff! My new favorite drink!

once a heard of a stranger that was taking a walk in brazil and she saw many people taking mate from gourds in a happy sunday in the park, from children to old people and bravely asked to her cicerone - is that a drug?

Just a bit of info.. the tea bags SUCK BAD.. SOmetimes I too use the coffee maker to make a big pot of matecoffee.. but I find this very wastefull. Because the xanthines can be extracted many times from one amount of material, the traditional method serves the best. I have a very nice book that was a gift from my business partner in argentina called "Mate" and is about the history of its use. Very healthy habbit, much better than betel chewing or tobacco.

hmm. I'm really craving the stuff now. I think i'm going to make some first thing in the morning and drink the traditional way. People are always asking me how take care of their gourds. I was sent a long document on how to do it but cant seem to find it, does anyone have a link to an article like this?

Its good with a little sugar.

theres many recipes (i wish i knew everyones favorite recipe!!)
the most basic recipe is just yerba mate and hot water, steeped.
