Yerba Mate

Has anyone here tried to grow Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguayensis)
as an ethnobotanical? I am wondering if it is possible.

i have already. but it was a couple feet tall when my mother killed it thinking it was just a bad weed in the backyard...
i never bothered to plant it again because the dry leaves are readily availiable here in south america and very traditional.i have already looked for seeds out of it but it is hard to find bcs only the large producers have access and only in BULK ammounts and they never let they plants give seeds (they harvest them before).
but i am still looking for them and i'll beep you if i find some...
this is a great plant to have. not really enTHEOgenic, but sure is an ancient ethnobotanical (before the kids start to ask)...
it is actually great to see someone wanting to grow it outside SA.

I tried to smoke it year ago... No effects. Haha I remember making a tea with 9 packets instead of 1. I remember goint to sleep @ 4/5 AM and still feeling extremely fresh ( i Drank the tea at about 10 PM ) After that waking at 6.30 for school... feeling a POWERFULL hangover, i couldnt walk properly, i vomited. So dont try this k ? :smile:

You could try to grow the native U.S. variant, Ilex vomitoria. It's been used for close to 2 millenia by Southeastern US indigenous groups. They make a tea, similar to Yerba Mate, called the yaupon, or black drink. It's used in various ritualized contexts as well as in every day life. It's often labeled as a purgative or emitic, but many don't get such effects. Caffeine content is around 0.30%, compared to yerba mate at 0.5%. I wonder about admixtures and such. I know there's evidence of Datura use around 1 A.C.E. in the same regions as where black drink was enjoyed, but ethnographic evidence of their combined use is lacking. Any one have any references?

You most deifnitely can and it's extremely tasty (the packaged stuff). Luckily, Bouncing Bear Botanicals is located in my hometown, so ethnobotanical goodies are just a walk away.
