ozone?
    #3073265 - 08/31/04 12:03 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

What if you used an ozone generator to filter any air that went into your fruiting chamber? Generaly ozone would illimanate any contaminants. The only question is would hurt the mushrooms?

I think it is so cool you are asking that. I often have wondered if a negitive ion generator would help in pinning. Not just in cubies but in many species. After storms and rains there are alot of them generated by mother nature.

But a ozone generator?? HUM.........I don't know.
I would try it but closly watch what is happing.

Unfortunately the ozone generator will definately kill your shrooms or any myc it comes into contact with. I think it could be used to effectively help ensure a clean environment before you do any cultivation endeavors ,but as far as during the grow o3 is a bad thing for the mushies.

O3 is an oxidizer also so the jury is still out on the safe exposure limits before it begins to be detrimental to your health. Even the home ozone generation/ion units could kill you if you used them the wrong way. Just be careful with them if you chose to make one a part of your life.

I've used them for aquariums and found them higly effective in removing parasites, nutrients, bacteria etc.

Does anyone know if it would be an efficient way of sanatizing equipment or other items we use?

Also I have read that in nature UV light keeps household molds and germs from contaminating soils. So is their any practical use for a uv light to be used in a cultivating setup?

These are some of the things I have laying around so thought that it would be nice if I could use them.

The UV light works pretty well for surface decontamination like counters and the inside of your glovebox, but it wont sterilize petri dishes, substrate, water, or anything else but surfaces and air.

It's also not good to grow under a black light or UV light. PF found that out.

If you're irradiating spores that's one thing, but constant exposure is not good.

So just so I understand an ozone will take pos. ions and turn them into neg ions. Correct me if I am wrong.

How does it work? If you want me just to research it I will for sure, but I think this topic is interesting and I learn a lot more when I am able to ask questions to someone.

Thanks in advance

No.... Ozone is not negitive or postive ions. It is a gas.

Negtive ion generators are for cleaning air. The negtive ions attach themselves at the molecular level to particals in the air. They become hevy and fall down. After a thunderstorm you can smell them. They smell like just after a thunderstorm LOL

Ozone is a gas I don't know shit about it except it's a gas.

Ozone O3 is a gas that is pretty much extremely toxic, it kills shit, and I wouldn't want it by my fungus, or in my house. Remember that it is free radicals (look Oxygen molecules) that are thought to be the cause of alot of very bad things, like aging. In my opinion unless you are trying to grow commercially, O3 is a bit drastic.

Yes, ozone is no good.

It kills the same way that bleach and hydrogen peroxide kill things, by oxidizing them.

I would keep any ozone far away from my mycelium. It's not good for plants either.

Like the other guys said, the ozone is an unstable gas that kills by oxidizing. What you are referring to is an ion generator. Although they often come paired up with an o3 generator, they are not to be confused as the same thing. If one uses a machine to generate a high degree of neg charged ions and disperse them into the air they will quickly bond with many positively charged particles in the air and precipitate to the floor where they can be vaccuumed up. Falling water creates neg ions naturally so just build a big waterfall in your house and your good to go! Ha! Ha!
