Here's a statement which is logically identical to yours:

"Voting for somebody besides Bush in this election, when it's obvious no third party is going to win, IS like throwing your vote away."

Once again, this has nothing to do with my feelings on which of the two would make a better president, it is a purely rational analysis of the statement(s). Since the names of the candidates can be interchanged with no alteration of the logical validity (or lack thereof) of the statement, it is in essence a statement devoid of any real meaning, hence a ludicrous statement.

And of course, the fact of the matter is that voting third party is not throwing your vote away. If for example the Libertarian candidate garners say 7% of the vote this time, you can be damn certain that political candidates in elections to come will tend to adopt at least some Libertarian positions in the hopes of grabbing some of that percentage. In a country where roughly 40% will ALWAYS vote Dem and another 40% will ALWAYS vote Rep, 7% represents a huge chunk of the 20% of voters who actually decide who gets elected. Most politicians would happily set their hair on fire in order to appear attractive to even half that percentage of undecided voters.
