Not an Ethno,
    #3051351 -

But I know this is the only place I'll get the replies i'm looking for.
I've become pretty passionate about orchids over the last year or so, I don't actualy own any, but I read what I can, and love going to see them at a local conservatory.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else here shares this fondness. And maybe there are a few shroomerites that own there own orchids?

(I'm over my upload limit so I can't post any pictures)

there's orchids that smell like grape-kool aid, there's orchids that smell like chocolate. There orchids that appear to be floating, there orchids so big two men are needed to carry it.

orchids:inlove:

Orchids are pretty awesome. I've never had any fancy ones, just the grocery store type, and they did good with a little shultz. I hear that orchid people and mycologists use alot of the same tools. I know that some use a laminar flow hood, but I'm not sure what they would use it for. Tissue culture?

One thing's for sure, you can spend as much money as you want on a single orchid.

I've got a couple, but nothing very exotic. They're just from a local garden centre. But they're really nice! And one has a great vanilla smell to it (vanilla comes from an orchid, for those that don't know...).
I'll get pics as soon as I get some batteries....

yeah vanilla comes from Vanilla Planifolia , the only orchid who produce edible fruit. its also one of the world most expensive spices. I know this plant can do well indoors so I have wanted to grow it for some time, my only problem is to get a cutting from it.

Why aren't Orchids considered an ethnobotanical?

Well.. I think maybe he meant not an entheogen. People sometimes use both terms to describe medicinal/psychoactive botanicals.

We had a spider orchid and it was absolutely beautifull. Orchids are great once you get the hang of taking care of them.

i meant entheogen.
I'm not sure what I'll grow yet, obviously not something expensive for my first orchid. I find it so compeling that orchids can outlive there owner. Many orchids have been passed down generations!

I like lady slippers orchids, I've even seen one in the wild, but there very rare, and I read they are worth a ransom.

Yes they are worht quite alot, I remember seeing a show about the balck market sale of ENDANGERED orchids.

The police here in Canada treat it very seriously, heres something that ACTUALLY harms the enviroment, and I am not allowed to grow cannabis???

Strange!, grandmas all around the country, are  making shady Orchids deals, and I am a criminal???

:nonono:

(Whats worse me growing , or people hunting a species of plant till extintion???)

Just make sure you dont mess around with black markey orchids

hes talking about nabbing them from the wild. like any flower they feed insects. its all a big circle and everything has its place. also when people go orchid hunting they often end up destroying a lot of things in thier paths. stoping on lily's or other orchids, clearing bush to get to the orchids etc.

I guess i just misunderstood this sentance.
I'm currently reading The Orchid Thief, by Susan Orlean. It's a pretty good read, ton's of factual information, which is always nice..

a little off topic but it relates in a fake way. the movie "Adaptaion" is really good imo. its about a really rare thought to be extinct orchid that the indians use as a very power drug. anyway it has nicholas cage adn a couple other lesser knowns. i liked it, im sure any orchid fan would like it, although its probably 100% made up.

Adaptation is based on this book I'm reading...You know how nicholas is a screenwriter in the movie? well he's trying to adapt this book "The Ochid Thief" into a movie...it's weird how they did the movie.

It's like a movie about a guy trying to make a movie based on the book the movie is based on. :nut:

Charlie Kaufman , the screenwriter, always has weird movies like this. Being John Malkcovich(sp?), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, Confessions of a Dangerous mind.

think it may have been the root of their idea? those are my favorite types of movies, liked medicine man a fair bit too.

that wasnt a real orchid, was it? well, in the way they made it out to be.

i must admit I kind of don't totaly remeber the movie.
but the book, so far, has mainly been about the 'ghost orchid' it's roots are it's leaves so it appears to be floating, like a ghost.
